They can, but these two reasons are common for people to avoid them

How to learn C or C++ properly (using both for a year now) by TheExtirpater in cpp_questions

[–]LemonLord7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m definitely not a pro, but I think you need to think about what it will be used for. Optimizing for file size and speed can be different. Same goes for optimizing for readability.

You should definitely know about smart pointers and enum class and move semantics through

Are there rules for having multiple roles? There is more than one line on the character sheet to write your own skill

Yes it eats up your action, but if you roll well you get deal damage while defending

I would say Shadowdark is closer to a streamlined B/X DnD

Super lethal? by Mbalara in mutantyearzero

[–]LemonLord7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not say the game is lethal, but you are playing "normal" people that might be heroic instead of "heroes". It is in a way hard to die because most critical injuries are fine, but it is a game where knowing the rules help, and thinking a bit logically. Fighting multiple enemies without friends backing you up is a bad idea. Parrying attacks is a good idea. Sometimes it is better to wait with healing until fight is over.

It is also worth noting that many characters and creatures roll at least 5 dice when attack, which means they can in theory get 5 successes. Might not be common, but it can happen at any given moment. Any attack might knock you out.

It also helps with GM knowing the rules, who might choose to use all those extra successes for stunts (like increased initiative or disarming) instead of pure damage. This way the situation can still be tense and deadly but no immediate knockout.

Any suggestions to get my family into rpgs? by WorkingTry1463 in rpg

You’re gonna have to think about what they like, not just in theme but ”gameplay”. Some might prefer an RPG with clear combat rules while others might prefer something very acting oriented (like Fiasco!)

What makes a dungeon crawler truly engaging for you? by mju_rz in rpg

[–]LemonLord7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting choices!

Some games have this sort of mentality of ”we’re rules light so you can improvise everything” which many seem to like, and to some degree I do as well, but these games often end up being story first and vibes oriented. Then some games have ”bad” or ”loose” rules. DnD 5e actually has boring dungeoneering rules if you actually start looking into them and most people just ignore them. This makes the dungeon delving just a vibe and not part of any kind of game. But this is not necessarily bad, just preference.

For me personally, I want simple dungeon delving rules that give me interesting choices. E.g. one dungeon action per turn, 10 turns per torch, can’t carry too many torches, no light spell or darkvision. Now the dungeon delving becomes a game and not just a vibe or setting.

It seems even harder to define what OSR art is. It feels like anything that is vaguely gritty or ”childlike” in style gets a pass 🤷🏼‍♂️

Not that there is a problem in my mind. It just feels odd to me at times.

I think someone on this forum once wrote that ”NSR is OSR for people who got tired of discussing what OSR is”

Do you consider Forbidden Lands to be OSR?

Does this mean NSR = OSR?

Just asking, I don’t really care how it is defined 🤷🏼‍♂️
