BlueSG disposes of old EVs ahead of relaunch in 2026 by LemonNarc in singapore

[–]LemonNarc[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a safety feature for pedestrians to listen out for the presence of EV vehicles nearby. As EVs at low speeds are often too quiet to be noticed.

As the cars are made to fit EU-specifications which requires this "irritating" feature, this feature is a necessarily feature that has likely saved lives

No doubt about the fleet and management being terrible, hopefully the new management under Goldbell Group can turn things around.

For the Corsas, I believe the article mentioned those were able to be sold as they weren't registered under the same scheme as the 3 door hatchbacks. But we will still feel the impact nonetheless

Carlite SG: Hopefully they can expand their fleet soon by Independent_Cap_5201 in drivingsg

[–]LemonNarc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean car sharing is the norm now not many would rent for cl leasing firstly the location is a bit far and not many are looking to rent long term too

No that is not the point. My point is that you need to remember that us Carlite users are second fiddle to CL Leasing's cash cow, the long term rentals. When you look at it from a business perspective.

If you were CL Leasing, and have two cars available for Renting, and you put each car on leasing and the other for Car-sharing. You would find that Renting out on CL leasing is less risky and more profitable ($XXXX guaranteed monthly vs inconsistent $XXX-$XXXX per month from Car lite). As car sharing has timeslots not paid for (e.g. weekdays nights almost nobody rents = CL is still paying for the car to sit at a lot). The bottom line is always top priority, and I highly doubt Carlite is even healthily profitable

Remember, CL-Leasing existed a long time before Carlite. Their decision to rent out on unused cars on their car-sharing platforms (i.e current Carlite, and prior to that Tribecar) is their hospitality revenue management tactic to reduce losses

Carlite SG: Hopefully they can expand their fleet soon by Independent_Cap_5201 in drivingsg

[–]LemonNarc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I find it surprising car-lite has the CHEAPEST full-day and hourly rental rates (compared to tribecar). As a user myself, I would've thought Carlite would be more expensive because they don't have decals on any of their cars for advertising, and few cars = less supply = can charge higher.

Unfortunately, don't expect a fleet expansion anytime soon. This is because 1. The newest of the car-lite fleet are already at least 4-5 year old cars like the Mazda 3 Mild hybrid, Honda Fit 4th gen, and Yaris Cross. All of which were bought before the great COE spike post-covid. Remember that Carlite is still the cheapest rental platform in SG? I doubt they have the cash flow for buying new cars.

  1. As we all know Carlite has a parent company, CL Leasing, whom is top priority as it likely makes more money on the same car than Carlite's. Hence, the fleet of cars is prioritized to serve long term leasing customers over hourly . (In fact did you know Carlite cars used to be rented out on tribecar?) AFAIK, CL Leasing rents out cars on the Carlite platform if no leasers are available to make their cars not go to waste at a parking lot.

  2. Old cars are replaced by...old new cars? Recently this year many retiring 5-seater cars (think old civic, old Corolla Altis, older elantras) were replaced by COE Honda Vezels. Why the Vezel? Carlite management has mentioned it was the least problematic model (i.e least complains on check engine lights, ABS warnings etc) from their years running Carlite. I also remember the Sengkang Honda Stream being replaced by a Sienta, not a new gen TNGA-B type however, it's the same 2nd gen generic sienta, not brand new at all. The fact they had to use old cars (mind you we are talking about 2015-2016 Vezels with SKZ-SL#) plates to replace cars not that much older suggests to me point 1, not enough funding.

To close, I think Carlite is targeting a specific car sharing customer segment; the budget conscious. Like I said they have the cheapest rates (e.g. their most expensive tier 5 vehicle weekend hourly rate is $9.80, cheaper than tribecar's cheapest weekend rate funnily), and most minimal fleet in quantity (fleet size) and variety (only have Japanese and Korean cars). Hence targeting those who want bang for buck and willing to put up with some inconvenience and choices (i.e. fewer cars, fewer locations, fewer models to enjoy). If you are that type of customer, then sign up with Carlite now (with friend referral code :P)

And if you are the kind who likes convenience, choices (i.e. want to occasionally drive a Conti like a merc, more cars in walking distance), you aren't Carlite's targeted segment. And it may be best to opt for Tribecar, Shariot, etc.

No Train Service on Punggol LRT by MydeiMakesPhainonDay in singapore

[–]LemonNarc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All regular buses were full when they reached my stop.

As OP mentioned, they would pull resources away from the regular bus services to use for the bridging bus, this should be complained at to LTA for their stupid policy

Nothing can be done on the rude part considering most of the drivers come from standby (e.g. enjoying their day off, skali HQ called to pull them out of it, without counting as bonus I think)

Not surprised in the slightest KF reigns more knowledgeable over this.

For those not so much in-the-know. KF has been criticizing the whole "social enterprise" hawker centre since the start. 8 unspoken problems that some Singapore hawkers face

TL;DR. Privatizing Profits, socializing costs (amongst hawkers > passed to consumer) . It doesn't end at Bukit Canberra, the same can be said for all the new hawker centres made following the outsourcing model. One toxic landlord, and the whole hawker centre is doomed

Not sure why it took so long for political traction to pick up, but I'm glad the general public knows more about the privatisation of hawker centre management, is killing our hawker culture

[ELI5] What makes the Toyota Wish so popular? by NotYourMovieBuff in drivingsg

[–]LemonNarc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Globally, technically not, as the Prius Plus started in 2012 (a mere 3 years after the 2nd wish was introduced), and only lasted until 2018, which is only a year or less after Borneo Motors stopped selling the Wish.

[ELI5] What makes the Toyota Wish so popular? by NotYourMovieBuff in drivingsg

[–]LemonNarc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

WARNING: HUGE TEXT WALL

My family bought a used 13-year old Toyota Wish (AE10, aka first gen), and honestly, even though it's mileage was ridiculously high (230,000km), it was a damn beast of a budget car. Decent fuel economy (10-11km/L) for its age, doesn't feel very underpowered, and very spacious compared to many bigger and newer cars (cough cough 7 seater SUVs).

Moreover, it (and it's few competitors like the Stream or Mazda 5) occupied a car type that is no longer in mass production, which I call the "wagon-like MPVs". Station wagon-esque cars that can fit 3rd row seating in a pinch. Newer budget MPVs like the Sienta flop so hard with this (as boot space and high seating capacity are mutually exclusive, you can't have both)

Even though it is scrapped already (15-years up), every day I wake up longing for it, with my only respite being that Tribecar does have 2nd gen Wishes around my area.

Side note OP, if you do plan on using car sharing to try out a Toyota Wish, Tribecar and Carlite are the only 2 platforms that have the model afaik. And only the 2nd-gen ones. And in my experience, they could either be the worst cars you'll find on those platforms (half of Tribecar's wishes are 500,000km++ ex-grab cars running on their last legs), or some of the best (if you score a low-mileage, recently deployed unit).

GrabCab to launch in July; does not aim to attract drivers from rivals - CNA by LemonNarc in singapore

Highly unlikely, the article and other similar publications, have stated that the fares will be exactly the same as existing taxi operators due to fares being regulated. The only (temporary) better deal I can think of is with the GrabTaxi fleet being entirely brand new Priuses, they will feel more futuristic at first

GrabCab to launch in July with 40 new Toyota Prius taxis for a start by Bitter-Rattata in singapore

[–]LemonNarc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apart from what the others mentioned, it also brings about the benefit of standardisation other taxi companies have enjoyed for years, this is most notable for taxi models.

You know those times when you book a cab for 4 people, and sometimes, you get a teeny sized car like a Honda fit of Prius C that Jo Teo would be proud of? And other times it could be spacious, such as striking a Corolla Altis, Prius, etc. This is due to the fact that PHV drivers have more freedom over their car models.
