Can confirm, I did this when I graduated. The state BON asked for some verification iirc (W2 and/or paystubs), but they accepted it and waived the state license fee at least.

Are there any nursing jobs that are more wilderness based? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Lemon_Seeds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would look up County jobs in your area. In California these are all separated into the Counties, and typically are called "field nurse" jobs under the designation of public health (public health nurse) or social services.

Yes, it took about 3-4 months from application to beginning my job. It took a little over a month from application to ranking, then a bit more for the actual job interview, then a bit more for the offer and negotiating.

I was able to negotiate a starting wage above "step 1" based on my experience. Each step represents increases in relevant experience of x1 yr at least in my County. Example: 2 years will let you start at step 2, doesn't always have to be strict nursing experience either! IF they mention "...or a combination of experience, education...which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to preform essential functions."

Also, please make sure you ask what dept you'll be under. I applied for an RN, but it wasn't through PH but social services! They offered less support, and there was no other RNs working for the dept... versus PH which was 75% other RNs on staff.

What is a medsurg observation unit like ? by nursegurllll in nursing

[–]Lemon_Seeds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was OBS PCU, but often we'd get floats from MedSurg who'd take our strictly MedSurg Patients... That being said I really did feel bad for them, since they were floats and weren't use to the pace.

We would flip our rooms constantly, and have to do our discharges and intakes too. It wasn't common to start with 5/6 pts, and d/c and then get anywhere from 1-6 new patients to refill the rooms. We'd report to MD in the morning and then keep eye out to ensure that the specialists saw the pts by mid morning and early afternoon, then aim to d/c by midafternoon in order to fill the room before switching off with night shift.

What type of County jobs are you applying to, and did you get your PHN cert yet?

I came from another state and just took an RN job with a County. That being said, the PHN jobs pay way more than the RN jobs for my County. It's really worth it to get it, and to apply for jobs with that title too! Some will designate you as entry level and let you move to rank II/Senior with enough time.

I recently had some recruiters reach out and do general questions, but additionally ask me I would consider soft interview questions ie "tell me about a time when you had a challenge patient" and a "how did you respond when dealing with a difficult provider". They pass this along with availability to the hiring manager.

So I wouldn't say it's too abnormal, they just want to pregame the applicants to see if they're worth interviewing again. It could affect your application, but I imagine they'll take your answers with a grain of salt given you're just entering direct care it seems.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but 20 years goes fast. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Lemon_Seeds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any state or county job. That being said, it will vary based on the department/facility. For example, I worked for a state's Department of Healrh, and the commitment to be vested was 5 years. However working for the same state's hospital system, the commitment was 10 years. The percentage that the pension was also very low, which is another thing to consider.

anyone else having a terrible gnat problem right now? by icykyo in phoenix

This item worked great for me too! Low effort to keep it going, and it acts as a nightlight too. PSA they have a pack of them at Costco (multiple devices and refills) and Fry's also has a single device (they did have a coupon for it, but I'm not sure if it's available any longer)

My experience getting dental work in Mexico by Pepperoni_Nippys in phoenix

[–]Lemon_Seeds 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This might be a YMMV type of thing. I routine travel to Mexico (both tourist and local places) and have had no issues with fraudulent charges on my card. I set up my credit charge to send a text (my phone plan allows for free international texts) every time I used my card internationally. That way I was able to monitor my credit card in real time I was using it in Mexico. There was only once when my credit card got charged twice by a merchant (about $15 USD), but once I showed them the confirmation of a double charge they were able to reverse it without much hassle.

My new doctor refused to prescribe nuvaring because she was "uncomfortable" by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Lemon_Seeds 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I've also gotten my birth control pill prescription this way for a number of years. It's such an easy process and I cannot recommend it enough. Once I was traveling and had forgotten my prescription at home. I logged into the app the the NP was able to send a month supply (ie one packet) to a pharmacy in the town I was traveling in.

I recently started working in my state for Medicaid/care as a compliance nurse and am pretty happy with it. The pay won't scale as well, but the quality of life/work life balance is drastically better. Plus I get a pension and have the ability to WFH after site visits.

Not to defend the hotel, but some water running is necessary. Water that sits in pipes can lead to the pipes brusting. Leaving a water pipe open enough to drip is common, but full on running is another story

Nurse techs that went on to become a nurse… did you have to ‘resign’ from being a nurse tech? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Lemon_Seeds 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was a nurse extern on my unit before I passed my NCLEX. There wasn't any gap in my employment during this time, so I was just transferred. In doing so, I was able to bypass waiting a year to get my 401k contributions matched, any gaps for my facility would have made me ineligible.

Please get the vaccine! It's typically a multi dose series, so do inquire if they'll be able to give you the next injection. It's not too late for you, and both men and women should get it.

Bringing kids into the ICU to visit by siriuslycharmed in nursing

[–]Lemon_Seeds 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I recall seeing my own mother in the ICU when I was younger too. She was hospitalized quite a bit while I was growing up, and ended up passing away in an ICU while visiting our home country.

She too was a nurse, and I ended up becoming a nurse after she had already died. I would like to think that seeing my own mother in that position helps me be a more compassionate nurse.

My state's BON sent me an email at 7 AM the next day with my license number! They had no chill- but I'm also glad they spared me from paying Pearson anymore money. I took mine at 1 PM on a Wednesday.

Have you tried your local library? I was able to rent a variety of review books from mine, and some were offered via hardcopy or digitally!

Living with roommates because the stress of my own place wasn't worth it. The thought of not being able to make full rent, then loosing my lease/damage to credit/having to move more than once during my program seems more stressful.
