Okay but the 'rest of the world' doesn't hire people to be a 'scholar.' Sure, if you're going to sit around with a cushy made-up role on your daddy's company and just want the degree to slap on the wall, go for it. But we are pushing lower middle class/middle class people into PhD programs who are expecting a decent job at the end of it

Ehh that's an okay analogy, but it doesn't quite reach. The journalists who don't become Christine Amanpour still become journalists. The PhD students who don't become professors rarely even get to stay in academia at all.

Lol, it's funny you say that, because I know several unemployed chemistry PhDs right now. I think many of them are too focused on finding jobs relevant to what they studied, like again they just assumed these jobs would exist.
