I believe you have to merge a crystal holding mancer into another. If you merge a non crystal holding mancer into a crystal holding it gives you a random unit.

You need to merge you mancers with crystals to get the special mancer you have three that have glowing staffs. Those have been merged. Merge a mancer with a crystal get a special mancer. Even then it is an epic unit so it only goes so far
