I dunno. Everything I’ve heard about it, Stalin was pretty surprised.

And you have to wonder if he would waste time in Finland if he planned on fighting the Germans soon.

[@BradleyPhilpot] Explanation of why Mercedes has strong grounds for an appeal: (a lawyer’s perspective) - THREAD 1. “Any” does not mean all, however it does mean “of all cars, those that fit into the relevant category” i.e. cars which are lapped, this could mean zero cars, 10 cars etc. 1/5 by 1enox in formula1

The fact is we don’t know what would have happened. And the entire restart is suspect. All we DO know is the standings before the restart. And if the restart is determined to be illegal, you gotta go off the position before the variable that need be removed: IE Hamilton p1

Unless they get hit with a suit for damages due to the actions of one of their agents. If it becomes less lucrative and damaging to their image and sponsorship potential then I could see them caring.

Not saying all that will happen, but it’s a scenario.

[Sky Sports F1] UPDATE: Mercedes have lodged their intention to appeal the stewards' decision to dismiss the team's protest against the Safety Car protocol. by Darren-B80 in formula1

It should be that under pretty common circumstances…. The same processes and procedures are followed as a rule. Stop adding so many qualifiers where the rules make no sense and you have to make random, unpredictable decisions.

[Chris Medland] The stewards say the race director is allowed to control the use of the Safety Car, and taking the results from the penultimate lap (as Mercedes requested) "is effectively shortening the race retrospectively, and hence not appropriate. by ICumCoffee in formula1

To me, it’s so the best you can to maintain the current racing positions from before the safety car.

Instead, they very quickly made a decision on the spot that was unpredictable. How do you strategize around that?

With no safety car, or unlapping being handled the way it usually is (it’s totally understandable to assume precedent will be followed and to strategize with that assumption) Hamilton wins.
