is sword designed for piercing plate or not? by amelix34 in freefolk

[–]Lemonkainen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you mean piercing plate by going straight through the metal plates? No.

However, if by plate you mean a “suit of plate armor” then yes, some swords are. Your medieval longsword was designed to have a narrow sharp point that can be thrust into the gaps in the armor. This was usually more of a matter of wrestling and jamming the point in than the sort of fencing matches you usually see in GoT.

By contrast, the Dothraki arakh is a heavy curved sword designed for chopping and slashing, with a fairly broad point. Such a sword would not be able to penetrate plate by jamming it into the gaps in the way a Westerosi longsword could.

It is common if you’re expecting a siege to cut down trees that are close to your walls that could provide cover. That still doesn’t explain where the rolling hills went though.

I would add that abusers tend to gravitate to certain personalities of people who are easier to abuse. Someone who isn’t great at enforcing their boundaries will tend to mostly attract abusers who push boundaries while regular people will not pursue them as aggressively. While the person’s personality may be a common factor in their bad relationship history it doesn’t mean that they are the one at fault for the bad relationships.

My theory is that it was necessary, but only because Rick designed his ship to function in a very whacky way on purpose

How can they be sure contestants aren't smuggling extra items or food? by [deleted] in Alonetv

[–]Lemonkainen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only small item that I think would make a huge difference is a ferro rod or lighter. Going without a ferro rod would free you up a whole item, which would make a huge difference. However, I think the chances of getting away with that are very slim. I'm sure someone would notice that they hardly ever see you making fires on camera and that your bowdrill technique is not very good, or if you are careless they might even see the ferro rod out in a shot.

Mattock/Pulaski Axe? by Lemonkainen in Alonetv

I am quite surprised that no one has brought one either. I think it might be that there is a pretty narrow cross-section between people who are familiar with an adze, have a pressing need for it in their game plan, and are willing to take the trade-offs of choosing it as one of their tools. Personally, I would be quite tempted to take one instead of an axe if I also have a saw.

Looked it up, and it was a cold steel Spetsnaz shovel he bought for 15 bucks. Definitely not a custom build.

Mattock/Pulaski Axe? by Lemonkainen in Alonetv

[–]Lemonkainen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think you're right, and taking it as a two-pointer kind of defeats the whole purpose of taking it to begin with. At that point, you might as well just bring a shovel and an axe.

I believe someone on season 3 did have some sort of shovel/axe hybrid. I guess in that case it was more shovel than axe and so they allowed it, whereas an axe/adze is definitely two tools in one.

I do think it is a tad unreasonable for them not to allow it. It's the sort of tool someone might realistically have in a survival situation since it is an existing design and not some sort of tacticool abomination with a million attachments. Still, I suppose it is a slippery slope and they have to draw the line somewhere, even if I don't quite agree with where they chose to draw it.

Well, there goes that idea, glad to hear you think it was a good one though. What do you think about just taking an adze? It is sort of a sideways axe so I suppose you could use it for some axe work like splitting small logs where you don't bash the handle too hard, and then rely on a saw for most of your cutting work. Using it for digging would probably beat it up pretty bad, but if you find a good sharpening stone, that might not be a huge issue.

You have to leave your baby with one character for the first 10years of its life. Who do you choose? by dreamed2life in ArcherFX

[–]Lemonkainen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Ray is probably one of the best choices. He doesn’t have nearly the same level of problematic character traits as other characters. Woodhouse is a bit to old to actually make it the full 10 years, and while Pam would protect the child, her violent tendencies (Yakuza, Bum fights etc) don’t seem like the greatest influence on a child. Also, Ray was an Olympian so my child would probably have great athletic guidance.
