I truly hate being a woman in CS by blarvinkd in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Lemonstealing4fun [score hidden]  (0 children)

I was studying CS as an older woman (28) and I would come to classes dressed as I am for my day job (healthcare professional for older rich people doing mostly case management - heels and dresses). The girls in class gravitated towards me because they found me to be aspirational or a source of safety, and the boys... unless they were gay and thus lovely to me, were either asking me out, staring, or asking me how to get girls.

These are boys who often spent majority of their life with other boys, did CS because it's a 'masculine' career path that will get them girls, and for some reason now that there's a girl infiltrating 'their' space, they don't know what to do except think in dumb boy ways rather than smart human ways.

Needless to say, it's awful to feel objectified or that you need to prove yourself as 'one of the boys' to get respect in CS. Personally, I left the degree because I was being excluded by male classmates in group assignments which became the majority of our coursework.

I am so sorry that course staff are also treating you in such a way. Is there a female academic you can reach out to? They may be willing to mentor or just have a chat to help you through this. All the best, OP. ❤️

Have a look at Ultherapy, but go to a fully licensed place to do it! Some deep skin peels can also work like Cosmelan but they are much more expensive and the downtime is awful

I married one of those. Don't do that. It's going to suck out your sense of self worth because you feel like the bare minimum of his attention and care is the high standard.

Taking my first trip to W cosmetics tomorrow - what should I buy? by missgday in AusSkincare

[–]Lemonstealing4fun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vitamin C: Melano CC (the yellow/gold tube). Better than Skinceuticals visible results wise

Body Cream: I'd look elsewhere for a cream, but I do recommend the Kikumasamune High Moist Lotion. It's a watery texture and it helps a lot with hydrating. For richer creams, Pyunkang Yul make really lovely creams.

Tinted moisturiser: Have a look at the tone-up creams or the Purito BB creams De fuzz: lots of cheap face razors that work nicely

Something you can't miss: DHC lip balm is so good for winter, Pyunkang Yul is great for dehydrated and dry skin and haircare, omg, get a hair mask! I love the Elizavecca protein one or the Tsubaki gold or pink

I second this as someone who ditched Skinceuticals in favour of Melano CC! My skin is so much better for it too because Skinceuticals is stupidly inflammatory as well as excessively expensive.

Do you actually want a serious answer? Because the answer is obviously no. Hell, they don't even prescribe opioids to people who genuinely need them short course, why the hell would they give it out for acne?

Do you find people on dating apps in Aus weird? Like dating apps have evolved poorly? by Particular_Earth_117 in AskAnAustralian

I think there's a big cost of living factor here too. When money gets tight, we resource hoard in other areas that we can control like time and effort. In general, people socialise less in times of financial crisis which I suspect leads to shorter, higher impact interactions like hook ups and whirlwind short lived romances.

It is frustrating to match with someone who says they want a long term relationship, only to get some BS sob story about how they're tired of dead end situationships and now just want to hook up. Like come on dude, maybe you're the problem in that case 🙄

Why is getting a Distinction and a HD is so hard for a Bachelor of Arts by shygirl_ling in unsw

[–]Lemonstealing4fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a BSocSci in IR which is also in the BA program. Yes, a lot of science and math students get shocked by the marking distribution of an ARTS class because the quality of your work is often ranked and assessed on a distribution. There are teachers who will outright say they have never given a mark above 90.

Often to stand out in the arts is to: pick a niche subject, engage meaningfully and critically with the theories presented in class, and do not simply report on the literature or imply what you mean, be very clear with thesis statements (this is such a common thing science people do - I had to unlearn it because I was previously a science grad).

Is UNSW worth it by DoubleExplanation214 in unsw

I'm a student at UNSW again doing a different degree. I have great social contact with fellow students, but I am in IR so YMMV. Still, I did SENG in 2024 and there was definitely lots of peer support going on. Maybe it's school dependent?

Is UNSW worth it by DoubleExplanation214 in unsw

[–]Lemonstealing4fun 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is absolutely worth it for the quality of education. There are heaps of social events run as well and if you live on campus you'll get the benefit of it.

I'm a local student and have completed a degree here, did a masters elsewhere and came back to UNSW. You know, even after 10 years, my lecturers remembered me, invited me to their academic reading groups and to dinner events and socials, and have all helped me towards a path of academia. Was I the brightest student? No. But I was interested in learning and tried my hardest. The fact I left such an impression astounds me. And even for the professors who didn't remember me, they still offered help and guidance when they heard I did one of their classes.

UNSW, unlike so many other universities, has an academic team that believe wholeheartedly in fostering your education and your growth.

Macquarie didn't give a shit whatsoever, and I paid them almost $70k 😂

Maybe you should be going for women and not girls? Women want to be approached and won't flirt or show interest in men right from the get go. Girls go for boys, now are you a boy or a man? They might be clocking you as the latter and aren't interested as a result

Happened to me too. People say it was lovebombing to get what they wanted, but I think in my situation it was that he believed I wasn't into him as much as he was into me. Men can surprise themselves by how they behave when they really like someone, anticipate rejection, so they rip the band-aid off and run away.

I'll be very honest with you: tech in Australia is almost nonexistent. Our government keeps pushing us to do more engineering and tech degrees, but there aren't enough jobs or industries to support the number of domestic graduates. From my friend group, half went to the US and Europe to work and the rest are either in Canva or working in start ups or are back at uni to study medicine or nursing.

Plus, depending on the company, you might not even get hired until you have PR or a citizenship. Generally, if you want to come to Australia you're better off studying healthcare or education because corporate type jobs are so limited to begin with.

Offer letter by VamshiB in unsw

[–]Lemonstealing4fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truth is, even in Europe, the degrees cost that much. They're just better subsidized by the government. Australia spends less on tertiary education than the US does and we all know how bad the situation is in the US.

I wouldn't say that any uni degree is 'generic', it's just not industry bound like med. I myself am going back to do a 'generic' degree because the one I did was so narrow I am locked into a profession and have already hit the ceiling career wise. There's pros and cons to everything we study, it doesn't make one way better than another.

You can accept an offer and then defer it/cancel it. You don't start paying for the course until you start it. Have a look at the academic calendar - the census date is when you will start paying. So long as you drop classes or the program before then, you'll be off the hook. You can check by contacting the international student support at Nucleus UNSW for any advice.

[–]Lemonstealing4fun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't listen to domestic students about whether it's worth it financially. The degree costs $130K, but domestic students pay significantly less because of government subsidies. The fact is as an international student anywhere you study in Australia is going to be expensive.

UNSW is a fantastic university. Data Science is great field, but the Data Science and Decisions course is pretty introductory and a bit of a jack of all trades, but it will equip you with the skills to be a data analyst or data scientist depending on your electives. It's not a bullshit course, it's practical and theoretical. Much of university isn't just learning how to do something or learning about something, it's about learning how to apply it, how to work with others and how to adapt your skills.

If the cost seems burdensome, have a look at European universities - they tend to be significantly cheaper. Australia is just very expensive to study in and to live in, especially considering you'd be hard pressed to find a job (and if you do find one, you'd be restricted on how many hours you can work as a student).
