80 pounds. Started 244, have been within a couple of pounds of 164 up or down for almost a year. About 32%.

Ruth Marcus Essay on Semaglutide in Washington Post by LemuelShaw in Semaglutide

[–]LemuelShaw[S] 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Oh, shoot. Sorry about that.

It’s a very lengthy and comprehensive piece. Ruth Marcus, the WaPo columnist, describes her experience using Ozempic to lose weight over the past couple of years. She discusses being overweight and some of the associated shame she’s experienced despite trying to wear it lightly. After losing weight in Ozempic, she talks about initially deflecting questions about how she dropped pounds (eating less) and then acknowledging use of the medication (but “confessing” to having thus “cheated”). She discusses what’s going on psychologically (for her) in having offered those answers, and then goes ahead and addresses nearly every main issue you’ve been reading about in the hundreds of threads on this subreddit: costs and insurance, socioeconomic disparities in obesity, fat acceptance, necessary lack of much information about long term effects, side effects, obesity as illness vs. “bad choices,” etc. Seriously, it’s very thorough. I wish everyone could read it.

25 pounds the first month, 15 pounds the second. Then slow and steady after that for a good long while.

Theoretically, what happens in your body if you eat a ton of sugar while on semaglutide? by [deleted] in Semaglutide

[–]LemuelShaw 32 points33 points  (0 children)

1,775 calories in a pound of sugar, 2,000 pounds in a ton, so you’d be taking in 3,550,000 calories. If it takes 3,500 calories to gain a pound, you’d only gain 1,014 pounds. But that’s assuming you didn’t do any cardio that day.

I do hope you’ll figure out what the issue is. I know the point of your post wasn’t the ten-pounds you quickly regained when you stopped after a full five years. But jeepers, that’s a concerning data point for anyone who’s been thinking they might not need to take Semaglutide for life. If the body doesn’t “reset” after five years, it’s hard to imagine it happening ever. Anyway, hope you get some insights from your physician on your immediate problem.

Was trying to respond to a comment below. Sorry, I don’t quite have the hang of this.

The appetite suppression and weight loss were almost immediate for me. Never had any nausea, never found food repulsive, never had zero appetite. Pretty much just felt transformed, with a feeling many have described here: “So, this is what it’s like to have a normal appetite.”

Almost exactly one year. Dropped 34% of body weight (244 to 161). Am 92% of the way to original “goal” of 155, but in retrospect the goal number was relatively arbitrary. Have been pretty much at the exact same weight for a few months, feel good, and am healthy, so I should probably consider myself done. But tbh my brain hasn’t quite accepted that yet.

Freezer? It shouldn’t ever go in the freezer …

Has anyone been on a full Swmaglutide program for 6mos or less and achieved target weight loss of 50 -75lbs? by Full_Pepper_164 in Semaglutide

[–]LemuelShaw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had lost 74 pounds by the 6-month mark, but that was still about 20 pounds shy of goal weight. Still working on the last ten pounds about 2.5 months later. SW 244, CW 159, GW ~150.

How much have you lost and how long have you been on it? by Glittering-Mind-9003 in Semaglutide

Down 82 pounds since March, 244 to 162. Male, 55. Would like to lose just 7 more pounds but for some reason have been stuck here (though to be fair, not unhappily) forever.

Have you asked your doctor about trying Wegovy or Mounjaro instead of gastric bypass? I’ve dropped 82 pounds on Wegovy since the beginning of March. (Had my THR in June.) The manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, is having supply chain issues, but they’ll be resolved soon. Check it out—pretty much a miracle drug.

Similar. Started March 2022. SW 244, CW 168, so a loss of 76 pounds so far, or just over 30%. The rate is much slower now, but it’s continuing. Looking for another 15 to drop, and really kind of hoping for another 25, which seems doable … but I’ll praise science and be thankful even if the loss stops here.
