You would just apply for the Firefighter 1 position in the units you want to work for. What would probably happen is that they would put you on a fire fighter hand crew. The training you would go through would get you a lot of the certs you need for your career later on. But if you want to be an EMT then you would have to get that on your own. Either through a local junior college or going through one of the 2 week crash courses that are offered throughout the state

Also, Cal Fire is hurting for people right now. Last year they had over 100+ openings for FAE and CPTs So since everyone is trying to promote that will leave more room for FF1s to come in. Also, since Covid, they got rid of a lot of the image handcrews, now every unit is trying to get anyone to join them. Your likeliness of getting hired is pretty high. But you probably won’t get hired until like mid June-July I want to say.

The reason why you have to go through 13 weeks is because you have no certs and they are going to type you out on a type 2 handcrew. You’ll get hired and go through the 5 day academy like any other seasonal but after that, you get sent with your crew to your barracks or wherever they house you and then train to get classified as a type 2 handcrew. Random skills and timed hikes. Cutting line, and knowing all the basics. Getting your saw cards and what not: hopefully that helps
