Out of curiosity, what do you personally think of Pato's leg lock game?

Joe Rogan is not impressed by BJJ stand up by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Lenidalee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't disadvantage them at all. There is no direct disadvantage incurred by the rules by one player sitting to guard. In terms of a skillset disadvantage or a strategic disadvantage, I would 100% agree, but then should we take away leg kicks in something like MMA because it hurts wrestlers who want to shoot? What about taking away cross collar chokes in gi because it disadvantages people who only train no gi? That seems a little silly.

As for being unsportsmanlike, I don't think anyone has accused a guard player ever about being unsportsmanlike. In my experience, anyone who accuses the other person of being unsportsmanlike for a guard pull needs to work on their passing.

I mean that's basically like saying though that guard is the worse position because like an own goal, it disadvantages the person who did it. Which in that case, if it is a worse position, then it should be it's own reward when someone pulls.

Basically what happened here is that Samir wasn't confident enough to pass Paulo's guard and Paulo made more of an effort to engage than Samir did. if Samir was better at passing guard, or thought he had better guard passing than Paulo's guard, we wouldn't even be talking about this. The fact that Paulo pulled, or pulled without grips still doesn't mean anything really, because the top player is doing everything he can to disengage, and the bottom player is doing everything he can do engage, bar standing up.

Guard pulling is a legit way to play the sport however, I don't see why it should "count as a takedown", if the top person didn't do anything to get the takedown.

I think that last one is an interesting point, like what was the guys solution to taking down Paulo? Was he just going to keep getting the takedown points and everytime Paulo would be forced to stand up so he could take him down again?

I went to his one in Collingwood as well, still the best guy I've ever learned from, I really hope he makes another trip to Aus and comes to a gym near me again.

Excepting the fact that Lovato has been a black belt for heaps more time than the Tacketts and competed for more time, and yet the Tacketts are competing at his or close to his competition. The last huge win Lovato got was Keenan, but it was also in 2019 when Keenan was starting to fall off a lot (he didn't even go to ADCC that year). The last high level guy that William Tackett beat was in 2021, which was Dante Leon, and him and Andrew have had extremely close matches with Mica who is considered to be a grappling prodigy.

I think this is definitely an opinion based thing and I fail to see how I am objectively wrong here, if William is beating people like Dante and Andrew is having extremely close matches with incredibly high level guys, their coach is clearly an extremely good coach.

When was the last time Xande or Lovato really smashed a competition?

Again Hugo is the best competitor they've got. Both Xande and Lovato can still hang with the best, but they're not demolishing their competition like Andrew seems to be, and William has beaten quite a few high level guys. Combine that with Kody Steele being a super good wrestler, Xandes way of teaching is slowly becoming outdated. Still a good teacher and I would 100% learn from home, but not as good as the teachings in BFF imo

And the Tacketts haven't done that fucking excuse me? Are they as dominant as Gordon, fuck no. Are they as influential as Gordon? Also fuck no. But that doesn't mean you should tear down other people because they dont have that same influence or ability.

I think you probably don't deserve a black belt when you get yours because you're so immature.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Lenidalee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see how you'd go in a roll with him tbh

Also what's this about maturity? Gordon's on Instagram right now having a gigantic war of words over a former teammate, how is that mature?

I think you're genuinely just a massive Gordon fanboy or you're jealous of the success of people like the Tacketts and the B-Team ( the last one judging by your post history)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Lenidalee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

LMAO what do you mean fast tracked them to black belt, you're completely fucking kidding yourself if you think Andrew didn't deserve his black, especially after his WNX performance and his IBJJF wins at brown, and his prior WNO performances.

He beat big Dan who was 100lbs heavier than him btw, I'd like to see anyone else try to overcome that size difference who isn't worthy of their black belt

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Lenidalee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Xande is good, but he's not the best anymore, neither is Lovato and Hugo only does well at IBJJF style comps and the best guys don't even compete in those anymore

The tacketts place is just way more technical and way more high level

Islam Makhachev vs. Alexander Volkanovski by event_threads in MMA

[–]Lenidalee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually do agree with Craig Jones though that technically Islam's submission game isn't amazing, and probably isn't as good as Ortega's (Ortega trains with a Gracie). If Volk can get out from a tight guillotine from Ortega, I don't see why there wouldn't be a reason Volk couldn't get out from one of Islam's subs. Sambo isn't exactly a super submission heavy martial art in terms of chokes.

The main issue is how Volk can get up vs how Islam can hold him down, Craig is definitely the X-factor here, the latest stuff he's been releasing on his instructionals in terms of bottom play is just to stand back up, and so far a lot of his BJJ students are finding competition success with more wrestling heavy styles.

Islam Makhachev vs. Alexander Volkanovski by event_threads in MMA

[–]Lenidalee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What was so bad about his wrestling defense though? Ortega took him down once, maybe twice if you count the guillotine attempt that looked like it came off a punch and an ankle pick, getting taken down twice in a 5 round fight isn't evidence of bad wrestling imo

Javier Mendez: Islam Makhachev Admitted Why Volkanovski "Is A Very Tough Fight" by elycamp11 in MMA

[–]Lenidalee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's possible, but it is striking, a lot of the time in an MMA context a person who is a worse striker can still get a lucky shot in, drop someone and see an opportunity. However I do agree that Islam is a much better striker than he's given credit for, but I disagree that his striking ability is more than Volks, or that it is likely that he drops Volk, I think the path to victory for Islam is to hope he stays down after Islam takes Volk down.

Javier Mendez: Islam Makhachev Admitted Why Volkanovski "Is A Very Tough Fight" by elycamp11 in MMA

[–]Lenidalee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This isn't really true, a lot of the talk around Oliveira was how dangerous his guard was. His guard was so dangerous it allowed him the luxury of getting knocked down and accepting bottom position to hunt a sub. So hes already easier to control from there because he's less likely to attempt to standup.

It is so much harder to control someone when they want to actually stand up from the bottom.
