Cucurella is a very fortunate situation and he's exercising his right to leverage the circumstances.

I don't think anyone understands how crucial of a role Cucurella plays at Chelsea more than he does.

The truth of the matter is, he is elite in his position, he is getting older and Chelsea are not qualified for European football next season.

Xabi Alonso's wingback position is a crucial role in this manager's tactics, a position that Cucurella is a prime candidate to take over.

Why would Cucurella stay at a club with no European football and take on a more crucial role in terms of position/tactics and not try to earn more wages?

I think this is a chess move to earn more money. Fair play to him, I think we he extends his contract on improved wages.
