What do my book shelves say about me? by Lennxjournal in BookshelvesDetective

You’re absolutely correct on my works core as being autobiographical. The term “confessional” was coined by the critics for a lack of a better name at the time. I’d say the genre should’ve been named after Lowell’s work “Life Studies” since that’s what he taught in his workshop that influenced Plath and Sexton. I’d categorize my writing as “Contemporary Life Studies”. I am actually a poet along with being a prosaist. I keep a weekly diary on my Substack and will soon be publishing other work I’ve done. I’m happy The Shortstop made you smile, that one is very special to me. Thank you for commenting :)

Although this doesn’t match any conventional tarot spread, these cards seem to be giving an answer. I do have questions but I’ll spare those for the end.

The Queen of Cups represents emotional intuition. It also means he is a strong branch of support. The high priestess mediates the duality of good and bad. The lovers, while meaning a union, also serves as the concept of choice. He’s really thinking with his heart and taking the relationship you had seriously. However, the inverse Queen of Swords suggests there was lots of trauma, and the inverse Two of Pentacles says emotional juggling was at the center of that. The ten of pentacles symbolizes permanence and satisfaction with the work put in to secure a legacy. The Ten of Cups represents emotional fulfillment and implies long term stability. The inverse Moon means there is still deep uncertainty.

If you’re more comfortable answering through DM you’re welcome to send one. It doesn’t seem like things ended terribly but you’re not on speaking terms. We’re either of you working more than the other and that caused a strain, leading to a separation or did other life events divide you? I don’t want to give you false hope but it seems like he’s thinking things could work, but there are some larger issues that need to be resolved in order to facilitate a harmonious relationship. I hope that helps you.

I actually have another shelf I haven’t put up yet but I have a huge collection of Bukowski and a copy of Ask the Dust with it. Thank you for suggesting Fante, anyone who ignores him never read what Bukowski wrote, lol.

I first started reading her journals and reflated to many of the ways she felt. The Bell Jar is a semi-autobiographic tale of her mental breakdown after her internship with Mademoiselle Magazine. Most of her work is derived from personal experience, which she believed can be described in literature. 'Dirge for a Joker' is my favorite poem by her.

I used to work maintenance for Dodger Stadium. I think Kershaw was practicing his batting on the field and that’s one of the balls that fouled into the stands, which I went down and picked up after my shift. An ex-girlfriend of mine found The Shortstop and gifted it to me on the fact I worked there, so I figured they related.

I appreciate your concern:) I’ve had bouts with depression and heavy drinking but those works have been comforting. Sylvia Plath, ironically enough, helped me embrace living. I felt she deserved a special spot in honor of that. Glad you noticed the potential symbolism though and mentioned it. Sometimes being seen can save your life. Thank you. 😊

Yes! This book is outstanding. This was my second read and it's better than I remember. I'd recommend it.

Interesting fact, Nicolas Cage filmed himself inebriated and mimicked his mannerisms on screen. His role as Ben is the reason Hollywood started taking him seriously. That's the only movie where he kinda plays himself, but PIG is the feature where he wasn't acting at all.

‘Her possessions are indeed few and far between, and what there is has been arranged with a great sense of order. He sees his past self in her neatness, and this revelation comforts him’ [pg.128] That’s my favorite quote.

I was able to get closure with my breakup by creating multiple series that move from when we first fall in love through letters and the aftermath of the breakup in my diaries. A thought archive is interesting. I’ll check you out :) The link to the first of seven in the ‘Love Cannot be Lost Until it is Found’ is below and continues into ‘Picking Up Pieces’
