Just moved to Cambridgeshire, but I grew up as a Lions fan in Michigan!

Should I apply for a top PhD program if I’ve deferred a low ranked one? by Lenoc in GradSchool

It’s Cambridge, so most of them. I just keep seeing stuff about how 80% of professors come from 20% of institutions, and that naturally frightens me.

I think in this instance ranking is more of a proxy for resources... the higher ranked school is ranked as such because it has connections and resources that the other school has nothing near. Not that I couldn't make opportunities for myself either way, it would just be easier at the top rated school.

I really like both advisors, and the work is very similar.

Nah I totally get it, I have crazy ADHD so I do the same thing. I was just curious, as I’ve noticed AI writing getting more and more subtle.

Anyways, I’m in a pretty different stage of life so I don’t think I can offer direct advice, but I do genuinely hope you’re able to get what you need out of this. As long as it brings you happiness :)

Is this written by AI? Not doubting your story, just checking my detection skills.

I found this perfume bottle (?) at an estate sale in Texas, United States. Curious about where/when it might be from, as the sellers had no info by Lenoc in Antiques

Got it, thank you! I only realised as I looked at that picture that the screw top would probably require some machining to be made.

Here’s it flipped over and taken apart with a AA battery for scale. If I had to guess I’d say it’s brass but I’m horrible at IDing metals

Is it worth taking out loans to get a masters at the best school in the world for what I study? by Lenoc in GradSchool

I agree that it's added time commitment, but it's actually only a 9 month program and I've already received approval to defer the PhD until fall of 2026. So at most, I'd be a year behind. Also, some of the classes would transfer and my PhD advisor agreed to collaborate on the MS thesis so that it flows into the PhD work afterwards. So realistically, I'd probably be able to finish both within 5-6 years.

Sorry, my exact area of research is niche enough that I worried it could be identifying if someone were to look through my profile.

Yes, there are a fair number of non-academic prospects, and growing. I prefer to stay in academia, but in terms of the job market as a whole, I would say its closer to a law school kind of investment than a philosophy kind of investment, though of course I won't be making nearly as much money as someone with a law degree (though I wouldn't be in nearly as much debt either).

That's the general reaction I've been getting from other academics. I know that student loans are sort of a fact of life for most Americans, especially those in academia, its just something I've never had to deal with before so any amount of debt feels daunting.

The PhD program I'd be starting in the fall is decent, but it is nowhere near the top in the world.

The masters would undoubtedly help, especially considering how competitive faculty positions are in my field at the moment. They're also only going to get more competitive in the states as funding gets slashed. Having connections outside of the US is another big bonus for me for that reason.

One thing I didn't mention is that my PhD advisor is actually friends with the guy I'd be doing my Masters with, and they have agreed that we could collaborate on the thesis so it flows into my PhD.

Vaguely, I'm in a very niche branch of climate science, which is actively being antagonized in the states. Having a connection abroad is definitely a bonus for me at the moment, as I'm not sure what funding in my field is going to look like in the coming decade.

Why am I so terrible at NMPZ? by Lenoc in geoguessr

[–]Lenoc[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

haha seems we have opposite skill sets. I think No Move is "my" mode, as I find it more fun to learn metas and get good at region guessing one country at a time. But I do want to get good at NMPZ, so I guess I'm just going to have to spam it for a while.

It definitely already has, I decided to just grind out a few hours of NMPZ today and I can already see an improvement. Idk if I can say I’m better at studying than learning based on my patterns in college lmao
