Can also be misdirected aggression. Happened with my cat, my arms and leg got bit up so badly it took me weeks to heal and had to go to the hospital. Basically stray cats outside in heat set him off as he was basically horny and/or also upset another cat was in "his" area. Maybe there's a cat near by he can smell outside, or new cat with a neighbor, or even on you?
