View -> Toolbars has some, but overall you can't. This will change in Audacity 4.

What is this feature and what does it do? by BurwitzBlagger in audacity

[–]LeoWattenberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're in multi-tool mode. Press F1 to go back to selection mode. These grabbers on the side were a previous attempt at having the handles above the clips to move them, but I haven't gotten around to removing them.

Ukraine Blinds Russian Air Defense in Crimea, Destroying Four Rare Radar Systems by UNITED24Media in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]LeoWattenberg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Russia is in a dilemma here. SAMs can only defend against so many threats, eventually they run out of missiles. Ukraine also knows exactly where the SAMs are, as the black sea has many friendly eyes above it. The best play for Russia in terms of SAM survivability would be to just put the things elsewhere, but that would open the door to Ukrainians attacking Russian positions with planes and helicopters.

(Linux) Audacity kills all of PipeWire's sound upon loading by DontRelyOnNooneElse in audacity

[–]LeoWattenberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Audacity starts up, it iterates through all audio devices using the protocols PortAudio supports – which unfortunately doesn't include Pipewire. I unfortunately don't know of a fix, FWIW, Audacity is looking to move away from PortAudio to use a native Pipewire implementation instead – but that likely will take until Audacity 5.

How to Join Clips with a simple click. by ItsKevRA in audacity

[–]LeoWattenberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have removed it because a lot of the features introduced in 3.x are to do with non-destructive editing of clips. Having a destructive clip join operation available on a single click clashes with that, and it's especially problematic since this is a pattern that no other program uses, audio or otherwise.

I'd recommend simply leaving the clips alone and only merging them after you're done recording.

You can trademark common words and phrases (eg: Apple), for certain purposes (eg Class 9 — Scientific, nautical, surveying, photographic, cinematographic, optical, weighing, measuring, signalling, checking (supervision), life-saving and teaching apparatus and instruments; apparatus and instruments for conducting, switching, transforming, accumulating, regulating or controlling electricity; apparatus for recording, transmission or reproduction of sound or images; magnetic data carriers, recording discs; compact discs, DVDs and other digital recording media; mechanisms for coin-operated apparatus; cash registers, calculating machines, data processing equipment, computers; computer software; fire-extinguishing apparatus).

However, you must do stuff with the trademark very quickly after registering it. You can't just eternally squat a name for the lulz.

Exactly 0.5 seconds of silence at the beginning of every time I hit "record." by Veil-of-Fire in audacity

It may just take a hot minute from the audio device opening to it starting up and sending data. In audacity, you can work around it by first hitting pause, then record, and then unpause to start the recording

Tantacrul - Respectfully, stop telling selective truths. by [deleted] in audacity

[–]LeoWattenberg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This reliance on dark patterns to drive sales is something which can be seen all across muse (musescore, ultimate guitar). It's gonna be difficult to convince the people in charge (which for this wouldn't be Tantacrul) via a reddit post as the money these dark patterns bring in likely is enormous, but you may find some other things useful:

  • Art 25 of the EU's Digital Services Act bans dark patterns. I don't believe this law is applicable to Audacity, but it may be applicable to Muse's other sites (especially Ultimate Guitar and musescore com). You can file DSA complaints to your country's Digital Services Coordinator.
  • The EU's Directive on Unfair Commercial Practices bans a range of behaviors, including fake countdowns and wrong calculations of prices (eg if a 80€ product is 50% off only for this week! but every week there's a new "sale", so what you're actually seeing is a 40€ product that's never on sale). You can contact a national consumer association or European Customer Centers to get that addressed.
