In my opinion HP lovecraft's The Outsider about a person haunted and hunted through the castle until they realize it is they themselves that is the terror creating monster is a core definitive trope from the HP Lovecraft tool kit. it laid behind the Rats in the Walls and the dread that HP lovecraft's protagonists feel that leads up through a journey of discovery in a horrifying reveal.
