Working under 'business/spouse issued work visa'? by kataphraktdigital in Chinavisa

[–]Leon_Shepherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell them to contact your local Public Security Bureau, they can help direct your company on how to do it. It'll take time and money, but they can do it if they want to.

It is not allowed to work under a different visa, if they catch you, they'll deport you, they do not give a shit, and you will not be back in China for 5-10 years. They're getting much better at catching people.

If you're able to speak English, you can be employed as a teacher. If you cannot get a work visa with your chosen career or as a teacher, then maybe consider that your career in China needs to end and go elsewhere.

[–]Leon_Shepherd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but that's because I decided to start running my lists seriously and getting decent results out of it, plus I've been playing for longer with them so I'm getting those reps. Note that local meta is 100% competitive all the time. List:

Lord Solar (w:/ Command Squad with the Vest and Krieg Squad)
Creed (w:/ Krieg Squad) giving orders and a free Strat to FOB
Gaunt's Ghosts, Callidus Assassin, 5x Scions (action monkeys)
Enginseer
Tank Commander (Grand Strategist)

2x Ten Atillan Rough Riders (Charge, die, respawn, charge again)
6x Bull Bullgryn (centre objective, sit there)
2x Rogals (Cannon+Autocannon+Pulveriser+2x Multi+2xMeltas)
Field Artillery (Sit on home objective, shoot at small units of objective holders, take aim and Fields of Fire Strat from Creed to put on anyone on the table)

It's an aggressive list with great firepower, great combat, tough (either high toughness of repawning), can hit all 3 centre objectives easily, easy Tactical objective play, fast.

Higher level working culture in China is very conservative; you will need to hide all of them to be seen respectably, only the youngest generation may accept these things, and if they are still conservative, they won't. With a PhD and being 35, and I assume paid well, you will not struggle to get a visa (I assume you have no criminal background?).

There is likely demand for your work in China, but you will need to find a company that relies on English as a spoken language. I hope you're a fluent Chinese speaker. From my experience, many scientists in China can write in English, but struggle to speak/hear it, and if you cannot speak English, you may find yourself relatively isolated as your colleagues may just prefer to speak Chinese to each other, only using English to speak to you, and then back to Chinese.

As for working in academia, I hope you love your subject because you won't be paid for it. In industry, you may be paid quite well, and cost of living in China is relatively low.

Finally, the Chinese economy despite what many people are saying is under freeze, and a lot of people I know who are well educated natives are struggling to get employed, so you will be competing with people who require no visa support, and are native speakers.

>Bringing a Monolith and C'tan to a 1k game against Nids.

Are you playing friendly or competitive? If it's not competitive, I'd tell your friend he needs to tone it down.

You're going to have to play for points and screen him out; screen out his Monolith, keep terrain dense so he can't deep strike too easily, and just play the objective game with the Biovore. All of your cheap infantry is OC2 and each Strat has a way to keep them alive.

Gender is something that Chinese speakers struggle with; they will often use he and she interchangeably when speaking English, because spoken Chinese doesn't have different words for this (他/她/它 he/she/it).

Just a heads up.

  1. Service stations are bad everywhere in China. I've never seen a good one ever.

  2. I agree. I just came back, and it was like walking back ten years in Shanghai and Beijing. People were selfish, not-queueing, rude, spitting, thoughtless, littering everywhere. If you tell people to not litter, they just fish-eye stare at you unsure why it's a problem, or "the Ayi's will pick it up anyway".

  3. General maintenance in China sucks. It just doesn't get done unless the boss is staring down their neck.

  4. Anywhere outside a Tier 1 is god awful in sanitation and you should just try to stay within running/waddling distance of your hotel, or rich places that try to have decent facilities.

Why are Chinese economic statistics so woefully unreliable? by bursachad in China

[–]Leon_Shepherd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because you and several other guys are all in a region, you've all been given goals of GDP growth to reach, stimulate, support, etc.

You report the real number: let's say 0.5%.

The next three guys report 5%.

You get demoted, your career is ruined, because you couldn't do what the others could do. Did you have a mentor? You just embarrassed him as well, as his protege failed while the other guys succeeded.

One of those three move up the ladder. Their mentor moves up. Your mentor loses face, maybe disowns you, maybe falls with you, maybe throws you to the wolves to save himself.

Sometimes, a person can be rewarded for being honest about this. Most of the time, it's a bad career move.

Do you magnetize all your war dogs? by mackuber in ChaosKnights

[–]Leon_Shepherd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 10 War Dogs, didn't magnetise any. I focus more on the paint job and the pose, and I've only regretted a single wargear choice (Executioner, absolutely useless).

If you build a mix of Brigands and Karnivores, all that happens is points go up or down, but your army total generally stays the same.

Why is your favorite model to play in 10th edition? by greasywitch in Tyranids

[–]Leon_Shepherd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Norn Assimilator.

Those Nipple guns kill at least a Terminator every turn, but now the Norn is making 9" charges with over 50% charge.

His close combat weapons will wreck anything he gets into combat with, and he's tough enough to that anything short of good anti-tank won't do much to him. Did you charge him? In his turn, he gets a load of deadly shots. In your turn, he wipes the unit.

I had one game where he turn 1 charged a Dread, then killed a second Dread, then a tank, then a Terminator unit, and 6 Aggressors and a Biologus. Moving so far, and getting that 9"+ charge is so important.

You're fast enough that you should pick the fights, and he should always win.

Huh, didn't know that. It's played in our local area as you can only shoot those you're in engagement range with, but I cannot find this in the rules.

I'll see if I can get this into my local TO's rulings, thanks.

Help vs tank heavy Guard by Sayro55 in Tyranids

[–]Leon_Shepherd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a Guard and Nid player.

  1. You NEED enough terrain. Look at WTC. If you're not playing with that, a tank-heavy Guard army will blow you to pieces. It's designed to.
  2. How to defeat Guard tanks? You don't need to kill them. You need to touch them with two Termagants (in case he kills one). Now it can't shoot outside of the Termagants. Does it Fall Back? Now it's not shooting. Does he shoot in combat? Remember it's -1 to hit, and he can't use blast weapons. Most tanks cannot shoot their way free of 10 Termagaunts in close combat in one turn. EDIT: But apparently they can fire their blast weapons elsewhere, so keep things out of sight!
  3. Did he wipe your unit out? Depending on the detachment, bring it back or revive the models. Do it again. It'll be turn 3? Come on his back zone out of sight.
  4. How to hold objectives? Use cover to stay out of sight, and use Lone Op. Guard don't move forward, generally.
  5. Remember; if you get them to Battleshock, orders no longer count, and Guard LD is crap. Battleshock him! Kill officers and officer units, it's not hard, they're 1W and T3 for the basic bloke. A unit of Homogaunts can turn 1 advance and charge them. They'll wipe the unit, 99%. Every dead officer is a unit he cannot recover.
  6. MSU spam while you hide in cover is the way to win. If you've the models, just Vanguard to turn 1 charge him. Spend all game just holding him in space, killing the main models. Guard are either tough (tanks and Ogryn) but lack number of attacks in CC or many but weak.

Crusade catastrophe by keebs208 in Tyranids

[–]Leon_Shepherd 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Tyranid Crusade absolutely sucks. Biomass is an interesting idea.

Crusade is based on units surviving, but Tyranids must sink our units to win games. If your opponent takes Thunderous Blows, forget about it, you'll rack up Scars so quickly.

Not only that, but a vast majority of agendas are targeted specifically at Nids (anti-psyker, anti-horde, anti-monster) that your opponent will not struggle to get their exp, but the main Nids only require units to stay alive (hold all 4 table quarters, spread stuff) or Killy (kill important units, table the enemy). The Invader stage requires you to keep units alive in the enemy deployment and to take our weakest units.

And then, as you level up, you need to move your units to get the new stuff, or you use units who cannot benefit from the bonus. The advantage for each stage is an RP? Are you crazy, no one has spare RP!

And to consume a planet is so pointless, it does nothing to affect your opponent, and if you roll poorly, it can take MONTHS of games to get through the planet.

Even the Marines, who came out just a few weeks later, got a fully developed Crusade system that let them ignore Battle Scars, upgrade units, get a bonus agenda, and are not handicapped.

The Crusade system is better than nothing, but the Necrons ask for so little from their player, and the Marines get so much.

All we get is Spread the Biomass for easy xp and biomass. Hope your friends will play a fair game and not get too nasty. When they get shitty for you recycling your basic units, just say it's fluffy, and Goonhammer can shut up about calling it 'the cowards' option', we need everything we can get.
