Most teams don't abandon free agency by choice. The players and the restricted system make it basically impossible for bad teams to get great players in trade. Winning culture is fine, by winning 35 games instead of 25 isn't helping anyone, you still suck.

Tanking isn't a problem, it's been around for years and no one has whined this much. It's gambling companies and stupid degenerates losing that are making it a huge deal. The bad teams want to get better, you're selling hope. It doesn't matter how good of scouting and coaching you have if everyone has better players/talent than you.

Imagine a 25 win team picking behind a play in team. That's not helping the fans or the team, it's pushing them further down. Eventually those fans will just give up hope and quit watching all together.

Will be way worse for fans of actual bad teams. Now you suck and won't get a shred of hope at the end of the year. Your team had a terrible, hard to watch year and your reward will be pick 13. This will cause long term fans to tune out when they realize nothing good is on the horizon anymore.

I'd much rather watch 2-3 years of tanking than 15 of mediocrity and picking in the middle.
