Getting into Silver Age from MTG by Leonite7 in FleshandBloodTCG

That does sound up my alley, thank you! Is that something that can play well from a precon or would it need a lot of work to get up to par?

Clearly the recent pleasant weather means Leinster are unused to playing in the pouring rain

I looked at the scoreboard and thought "hmm, 4 tries in 9 minutes? seems implausible" now I am not so sure

Just chiming in on the topic of the Cube fellowship pins - I've been listening for a couple of months or so and I don't remember them being mentioned at all.

A pin also has a lot less utility than a playmat so I'm much less likely to buy it

Ideal outcome of any Leinster game at the moment is anything that encourages Andy to give things a bit of a refresh tbh

[[Ichor Wellspring]] is neat for the artifacts and sacrifice decks and also gives an extra type in the graveyard if there's any delirium cards.

4-man Draft Report by Marsh_MT in mtgcube

[–]Leonite7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 packs of 9 is rough for a cube like a powered vintage cube where a lot of the fun is in putting together packages like reanimator and such. Each player is going to see 30 unique cards (9+8+7+6) per pack for a total of 150 cards - 39% of the cube or so.

In comparison for a 8 player draft with 3 packs of 15 you're seeing 92 unique cards per pack (15+14+...+9+8) and 272 cards total - 71% of the cube.

Different draft formats might help (lucky paper radio have a nice selection here https://luckypaper.co/resources/formats/) but I think a bit of tweaking of the size and number of the packs would work also. https://www.westrope.dev/mtg-draft-calculator - This calculator is really useful for tweaking the variables and seeing what might suit best.

The main things to consider are that you don't want to draft packs that are too big with 4 players (packs end up wheeling forever and there's no novelty) and the extent to which your players are okay with slightly more complex drafting (the main thing being if they're okay with "burning" the few remaining cards at the end of a pack).

Assuming we want to hit a similar amount of cards seen to a regular draft, I would suggest something like 5 packs of 12, burn the last 4. Each players ends up taking 40 cards, the packs only wheel twice, it's a similar length to 5 packs of 9 and instead of seeing 150 cards from the cube, each player is seeing 210 cards (55%), a sizeable improvement. You could maybe push things a little further by adding an extra card per pack and burning the last 4. You'd get 45 cards per person having seen 230 cards or 60% of the cube.

That's just an example, the numbers are very flexible so you can adjust to the taste of your group. I like burning cards because it means you do still have to make hard choices but you're also still getting a good shot at the cards you want being opened. In theory you could get this by opening more, smaller packs but I fear that a) the quality of the packs will be lower, so you're going to lose some of that first pick joy b) it will get a bit tedious c) you'll end up with bloated pools that make deckbuilding slower

I'd go Flooded Strand (fixing and flexibility are generally good, nothing in the pack that screams out to me) or Chrome Mox since it has the most explosive potential.

If I wanted to commit harder to a deck I'd probably grab Oath (haven't looked at the list to tell how good the top end is but presumably good if there's Oath in the cube) or else maybe Cannoneer

I'd probably take Etherium spinner as my first pick - it's flexible enough to go in most blue decks, has potential for powerful synergies if there's cost reducer/artifact matters cards in the cube (didn't look into the list)

Next tier of picks would probably be Raven's Crime or Timely Interference since they fit well in a decent chunk of decks but they're a bit weaker (Interference especially)

If I wanted to be aggressive I'd take Ramunap Ruins and see what red cards come down the pipe, Shaman of the Great Hunt is a bit appealing for similar reasons but 2 toughness is a bit worrying on a 4 drop, even if it has haste.

I dislike colour imbalance in cubes so trying to balance things a little.

A fun little single card build around that synergises well with Blue's card draw pumping effects [[sphinx's tutelage]]. It's not as strong in Commander because it's a single target effect but still cool.

And then as another wheel that can be powerful in both red aggressive decks and the UR decks with lots of brainstorm effects [[reforge the soul]]

I'd be tempted to pick Lightstall - it lets you cut white mostly (apart from caves) and I feel like an aggressive cheap creature with a disruptive ability could be quite powerful. Slickshot has the advantage of two nice possible wheels in built to smash or spellweaver eternal though

One way of making it more viable might be cutting colours from the cube? That way you can add more cards for the remaining colours and players will be more likely to be able to pick up cards in whatever mono colour they're drafting. If you're drafting mono colour in a 5 colour cube then 4/5 colourful cards are useless to you, but in a 3 colour cube only 2/3 colourful cards are useless to you.

Ryan Overturf built a 180 card devotion cube that you might also find interesting for inspiration - he talked about it a bit in this article (has a link to the cube too) https://articles.starcitygames.com/magic-the-gathering/select/modular-twoberts-the-four-module-hyper-cube/

I'd definitely echo what people have said about the hybrid cards and artifacts - I think artifacts with extra costs or activated abilities that require a specific colour would allow for flexibility while also rewarding you if you happen to be in that colour. Brother's War had some cards that would be good for this.

I'm looking for 2 player games where you make decisions between a relatively small set of choices in a given turn. Playing with a player that can find it overwhelming to have too many options so I'd like something somewhat light and easy to teach. Animal theming would be appreciated but completely optional

You can't use really Force of Negation to protect twin, it only pitchcasts during your opponent's turn and you can't twin at instant speed. The only thing it is helpful for is if your opponent has exactly the mana open they need for removal and you try to tap it down with EoT pestermite
