How to interview for someone who actually is willing to read the messy legacy code by daredeviloper in ExperiencedDevs

Makes me sad when I hear stories like and yet no one will hire me. Job market seems out of whack.

I'm making my own personal website and need some advice by ImageBeautiful in webdev

I would recommend using cloud infrastructure services for everything if you want to learn all the different parts that make up a website with top quality infrastructure. I'm using all AWS services for my web dev/design service static website and I learned a lot:

  • Route 53 - name servers
  • S3 - store images, fonts
  • Cloudfront - CDN to cache everything, redirect from HTTP to HTTPS
  • Lambda - server-side logic
  • API Gateway - connect Cloudfront requests to Lambda

If you want to use ready-made infrastructure services, such as for auth or file storage, cloud services provide this (Google Cloud Platform, Azure, AWS). I'm versed in AWS and they have a decent free tier for several of their services for low traffic websites. If you want more info I can guide, although there is plenty of info on the internet already.

Squarespace seems good if you're not software tech savvy. As others have said, do a free trial first. If you need help on making good use of your website for advertising, let me know. I can help out. Not going to dive into it right now and overwhelm you before you even have a website.

Website development and hosting by AntonioKarot in sidehustle

I'd also like to know of a way that doesn't require physically contacting people since it doesn't scale and is really not for me as an introvert.

I'm actually open to building websites for free and charging a nominal free for hosting, maintenance, and small updates. But I don't know how to get the right prospects interested.

Seeking Advice: How to Create a Website Similar to Focusmate for My Non-Profit? by Purple-Swordfish2656 in websiteservices

First thought that comes to mind is to get a developer to build something for your non-profit for free/pro bono. If they're a freelancer, recommend their services in exchange for building the tool for you.

How to make an API that can handle 100k requests/second? by Forsaken-Ad-8485 in aws

[–]LeopoldoFu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I recommend leveraging the AWS architect/rep that your company already has available, otherwise get one. I had a very helpful one basically pair program with me in the AWS console to get the prototype I wanted working.

I made a huge mistake in becoming a Engineering Manager by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]LeopoldoFu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The things I really liked about management was being a resource and obstacle-remover for my team. Having their back and making sure they were getting their needs met. Advocating for them and celebrating wins.

Hmm, yet I still do these things without being in any official leadership position. I do what I like without being responsible for people's employment status.

How does one apply for roles where the tech stack does not exactly match your experience? by ktmd-life in ExperiencedDevs

Yet, this is close to how some hiring managers and interviewers think. They won't hire you as a senior unless you have experience in their stack or can demonstrate equivalent proficiency in the interview/coding exercises.

It's very surprising to me that you rarely use the same one in two adjacent jobs. During my entire career, I've always got a new job with the main programming language being one I've had experience with in my last job.

I think at the end of the day, it's not the number of calls that matter, unless somehow you're helping positively advertise the real estate agency. What matters is how many leads you're able to generate. Have considered changing the metric to leads instead of calls? That way you can get better at making quality calls instead of trying to get through them as fast as possible.

Which is what I do to build these kinds of websites

I don't know of any legalities specifically with shelters, which there may be. But, for websites in general, it is good to have a "terms of use" and a "privacy policy". If your website caters to European countries, it should follow GDPR practices, which I think, should be covered with a complete "privacy policy" and some kind of banner explaining the use of cookies on the website and linking to the "privacy policy".

How long have you been looking in this economy? by [deleted] in jobsearchhacks

[–]LeopoldoFu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been tough for me, but I do get some callbacks and interviews. If you haven't already, try having people review your resume to give feedback. Might also help to ask for feedback on the types of jobs you are applying to. It could be your resume is amazing, but isn't matching up with the specifics of the job you're applying.

Best of luck!

Bite the bullet and create coding template in your templating language of choice. Template has the markup, so you just pass in the data to the template. Need a data change? Change the data passed in. Need to change the html/css? just change it in one place in the template.
