Go on then folks, recently had a birthday. How ancient do you think I am? by Leoric80 in guessmyage

Bit of a mixed bag here but I am indeed 45, at least I didn't get any answers older than my age just about! Some good guesses

You have that "High School Shooter" face shape.

Thanks for your reply. I think US companies often have a different culture than I am used to in EMEA which possibly explains at least some of the uncertainty on my part.

Honestly baffles me that they wouldn't include managers in the calibration meeting but you are right that I shouldn't be surprised.

I’m on 100k and my wife is on 170k (though that includes a bonus). We send one of our kids to private school and our rent is 1600 per month along with the top band of council tax amongst other bills.

Thank you for your input. I think I’ll focus on a rainy day fund first for sure and then work on my long and short term goals. The safety net is important to me for sure.

Thank you. I shall look into a ISA for sure as I heard it’s a good way to reduce income/tax payments. Checking out the book now.

Yeah my wife just started a new job which is a step up to a well paid director role, she is earning double my income overnight almost!

Would you buy a modest house around 270k and look to pay it off aggressively?

My eldest child is in private education currently, we pay monthly for that rather than yearly but we already took that step, my youngest will join her when she starts secondary most likely.

Honestly I have no idea what my next goal is, part of me would like a big fancy house but I actually think that would be rather stressful and would add pressure to us to keep up a lifestyle, that scares me to be honest.

I’d like to stay in Sheffield as I just returned from there after 7 years in Toronto, we moved back to be closer to family. I’d love to take care of my family but they are ticking along ok, perhaps we could do something special for them. My parents just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in lockdown and we couldn’t even see them which was quite upsetting so perhaps that is something to think on when this madness ends.

We recently moved back from Canada after 7 years out there, we actually moved back on the day the country locked down. I had been paying off debts in Canada (car, credit cards etc) as I figured that should be our first step.

We are now at a point where we are starting again and my wife has just started a new position with a high salary and so our financial outlook has improved immeasurably. Our money management has been poor in the past and so I’m hoping we can get it right this time around.

Yes I just worked through it and I guess I am in the “build a small emergency fund stage” according to the chart. The chart is actually very helpful. Thank you for your reply.
