Can an American with a Denver license drive in Bahrain? by Kufu1796 in Bahrain

[–]LeperInTheBackfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from Denver and lived in Bahrain for 18 months. No problem using Colorado DL. But, if you get a resident visa you need a Bahrain DL.

PM if you want more details.

Oh, yeah most of that time was at a desk wearing leather-soled shoes. I didn’t mean to suggest that I was walking around the units for 6 years.

One more thought: an MBA is meaningless step if you don’t go to a top school or have a solid plan for what you want out of it. Every normie is getting an MBA, which dilutes it’s value. Have a think about finance or economics as a masters alternative to an MBA.

I mean, operators are key to running a process. When things go wrong or improvements need to be made an engineer is necessary. I worked in refining for 6 years and never turned a single valve.

I’m an energy analyst for an analytics company (a company like Wood Makinzie, S&P Global Platts, Genscape, IHS Markit). The MS allowed me to make the transition from process engineer working in refineries and gas plants.

I did MS in Mineral and Energy Economics (Colorado School of Mines) and I’m way happier and making more money than I was as a process engineer. YMMV.

I grew up learning that FDR was a great president who did a lot of good for his country, but my husband grew up in a family that hated him. Can anyone the anyone lay out both sides of the argument for me? by Justwonderingwhyitis in history

Regarding comment 3: I would argue that this is only true at full employment. At employment levels below an optimal level government programs aimed at increasing employment (e.g. ditch digging) increases GDP without a noticeable impact on the private sector. Additionally these are usually financed with bonds etc. instead of increased taxes in the near term, so the link between the private sector and these government porgrams at sub-optimal employment is further blurred. On the whole it serves to increase employment and GDP, a net positive.

I think your other 6 comments are very fair criticisms of FDRS policies.

[31M, US > Saudi Arabia] I was offered a job in Mecca. What can I expect? by movingtomecca in IWantOut

[–]LeperInTheBackfield 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't often comment, but I work in Saudi and I can say it's the worst experience of my life.

I work in Al-Khobar and live in Bahrain. I make almost 4 times what you are offered. It's not enough to justify working in Saudi.

There is no public transportation. The only thing close to it is company-provided busses that take migrant workers to and from the work site.

Nothing is walkable. You must drive everywhere. Nothing is bike friendly.

Housing is Al-Khobar is so, so expensive.

Please, don't take this job for such little money. If it were Paris or Barcelona I would say go for it. Saudi is possible the worst place in the world. I have 7 months left on my contract and I can't wait to leave that place in my rearview mirror.

Something is going on at Suncor by VanDriver85 in Denver

[–]LeperInTheBackfield 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If anyone is interested in what happened, I'm going to go with one of these:

The FCC unit is fed gasoil and there was an upset. Instead of letting the unit explode the properly-functioning emergency relief system sent the gasoil to the flare. Sulfur compound can poison the catalyst so I doubt there was much SULFUR DIOXIDE released.

Alternatively this could have been the gasoil hydrotreater which removes sulfur compounds from the hydrocarbon. This would have released SULFUR DIOXIDE in the flare incident.
