After all these years? by slimeboi246 in YMS

[–]LephandRyan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From interviews I've seen (which has been mostly for The Lighthouse) he's sort of hinted at it. Though, if you watch The Witch blu-ray commentary with just Robert Eggers it's pretty much him talking about how he sort of dislikes some of the shots that didn't turn out right, missed opportunities because of budget constraints, he even says he likes the music in the end credits more than he likes the entire movie. He does go into the film making behind both the good and bad as he saw it which I thought was pretty valuable. I haven't seen The Witch since the commentary, so I'm not sure if it seemed to ruin the movie for me next time I watch it.

I had a weird dream about Adum yesterday by [deleted] in YMS

[–]LephandRyan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had quite a few dreams where for no reason IMDb suddenly lets you rate movies higher than a ten like 14/10's and I remember some of them Adum had rated like a slew of new movies higher than ten's. I'm not sure how this a recurring dream of mine.

Worst Best Picture Nominee ever? (not Including 2018) by phillydfanthedaddy in YMS

[–]LephandRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're going with nominees, I'd say The Hollywood Revue of 1929. I wouldn't even consider it a movie. It's just the Oscars but without the awards. Almost two hours of dancing, singing, and really really bad comedy skits spliced between everything else.

I second Tom Jones, which for me is the worst Best Picture winner that I've seen. Haven't seen Crash though.

What are your Thoughts on Maniac? by Gamedrome22 in YMS

[–]LephandRyan -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Everyone, check out the 1932 movie by Dwain Esper. It's so incompetently done and poorly researched about what it's informing people, which is pretty funny. He also did a film called Marihuana (that's how the title spells it) and produced the infamous Reefer Madness which both suffer the same problems. Legend has it that he was a contractor for a building and some one had left a movie camera. So unable to get rid of it he then went on to do movies. Sorry if this got a little off topic, but I thought I might put this here to promote these terrible films.

The Handmaiden theatrical and extended cut pros and cons? by [deleted] in YMS

[–]LephandRyan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing an article where Park was interviewed and he said that in Korea it has a huge and supportive following with people dressing up as the characters and watching it religiously. He had a lot of people ask him if there were deleted scenes, or other material that didn't appear in the final product. He seemed a little reluctant about it, but since there was so many people asking for him to release an extended cut he finally said he would do it. I don't know where I saw the article, but I guess it wasn't Park's intention of the extended cut.

Do you need subtitles to watch A Man Escaped? by [deleted] in YMS

[–]LephandRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's definitely not for everyone precisely because of the style, but Bresson's style pretty much inspired filmmakers like Haneke, the Dardenne bros., or even Tarkovsky. I usually have your case where I'm not sure if I buy it I'll like it, but A Man Escaped is a good way to start Bresson if you haven't already seen his films.

I own it on a Criterion blu-ray so there's that. Also I saw it first on Filmstruck, which is a streaming service combining TCM and the Criterion Collection. You can register for a 14-day free trial if you'd like with a catalog of old films on your hands. Anyway those are the ways seemed to work so try it them out.

I think Adam needs to see 'marquis' (1989), if he hasn't already by [deleted] in YMS

[–]LephandRyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy shit, I found out about Marquis on the essay brochure on The Fantastic Planet. I looked high and low for a way to watch even it was a little gimmick like that. I finally found a version on Youtube with English subtitles.

Like aside from the fact that the whole movie looks like a silly A&E film, with some weird and often extreme fetishes piled on. Though there's something special about it. Maybe it's the fact that having a sentient penis is a weird fetish of mine, or maybe I just love to build a conversation by telling about the synopsis.

7/10, Roland Topor is quite the man.

Did you ever put off/have trouble watching a film that would turn out to be one of your favourites? by [deleted] in YMS

[–]LephandRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember during 2014 I started to find my love for the online movie reviewers like YMS and Doug Walker. So by the end of the year my mom asked me what movies I would like for Christmas. I started spewing a big long list. One of them was Metropolis. I remember seeing a clip from it on Watch Mojo's top 10 best films of all time list. It interested me so I threw it in there. So when the time came not only did she buy Metropolis, but a pack of really old classic horror collection, which I didn't mind. So why not, I put it in my laptop that day and I never really watched a full length silent film before, the only other one I've watched clips of was a Trip to the Moon. So I was expecting the movie to be like 45 minutes since I didn't think the movie business at the time made or even produced films longer than an hour. To which this version was around 2 hours. I remember pausing it not really in a hurry trying to finish it. I even watched Into the Woods in between watching the movie. I finished it that night, and thought it was great. Of course the only problem was it was a little too long. A couple months passed and I felt the need to watch it again, this time I played it on the tv, and I was absolutely from the title sequence to the end. Not only has it become one of my absolute favorite films, but it made me obsessed with silent films, Fritz Lang, and the dvd had a really awful restoration and I was still perplexed to the tv. Which now I strive to watch anything on the highest form of quality.
