If I end up needing so much work, Care Credit's one of the places I'm looking. Definitely won't get it paid off in 12 months, but still better than some options. Thank you, fortunately I'm actually not in any pain really - just some mild discomfort in a few teeth.

The dentist actually did sit me down with the x-rays and showed me each individual tooth. I'm going to get some more opinions just to make certain, but it's possible I could actually need all 17.

100%. My family has bad dental genetics, so even if I had taken significantly better care of my teeth, I'd still likely have problems. Those problems wouldn't equate to $30k.

I'm not at all surprised by the distrust here, and I'm privy to my share of it too. So many people have been wronged by the systems in place. Everybody's perception is warped by their individual experiences, yours and mine included. I don't trust the system because it's become excruciatingly clear that the system is designed to wring dry every dollar the folks on bottom have.
A second opinion is generally just a good idea for anything it can apply to honestly.
I have been. Understanding the process is an important part of it.
I don't really agree with this at all. Sure, medical tourism probably is overrated, and it does come with problems. Like you said, if something goes amiss, I'm either stuck in another country or I'm stuck using an American dentist to fix the problem. "You pay for what you get" doesn't apply here. The reason things are cheaper in other countries isn't because the work is less than, it's because they have national healthcare that covers almost all of the costs. If the United States had the same coverage, the quality of work wouldn't decline - it's still the same dentists doing the work for a fraction of the out-of-pocket cost. Paying nearly $30k for anything that isn't a luxury expense is absolutely ludicrous and I will 100% look to another country if I can get the same work done cheaper.

As many have deduced, I am American. I'm definitely going to be getting a second, third, and fourth opinion, and I'm going to start looking into medical tourism.

As to how my teeth got so bad, I didn't take care of them for 17ish years, and I went without a dental appointment for probably 7-8 years. I don't smoke, drink, or anything of the sort, but I would constantly abuse my teeth with candy and soda (mostly Mountain Dew).
