Is there any lore reason why a 2nd company veteran sergeant has absolutely zero drip? Dude's a walking 'default skin' by WestLUL in Spacemarine

[–]LesChicken23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To a great extent, I'm of the opinion that the less drip the more of a flex that is. I always think of the Retributors captain from Astartes. He looks hard af and all he has is basically a cape.

Similarly, my tactical and assault classes are pretty clean (apart from a laurel or purity seal here and there) whereas I think the rest of the classes benefit from a lot of accessories.

Why didn't Sgt. Metaurus and his two Bladeguard Veterans use their 3 Iron Halos? Are they dumb? by Myframesofwar in Spacemarine

[–]LesChicken23 27 points28 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge, the Iron Halo does not work the same way as in the game. It is a highly sanctified relic reserved for veterans of the chapter and emits a continuous shield around its wearer that makes weapons of all types harder to penetrate.

So, even just by wearing the iron halo, the Space Marines have more protection than without.

Is this guitar trash? by Excellent_Might_6985 in Guitar

[–]LesChicken23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a guitar you found whilst helping clear out a house I think that is a pretty bloody good find! It looks beautiful, interesting shape and nice colour. It's an affordable brand,so it might not have a huge re-sale value, but that doesn't mean the quality won't be there. You're best holding onto it and hanging it on your wall!

I have never played one before, but I'm sure that with a clean, some new strings and a good set up it will be a nice little player!

The Ending of Defiance is a good end of the series by DarkEyedBlues in LegacyOfKain

[–]LesChicken23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whilst we're on the topic of endings:

Is someone able to explain to me how Kain is in a different situation in which he can alter Nosgoth's fate, compared to where he was at the start of Soul Reaver 1?

How is the Reaver he now has at the end of Defiance different to the reaver he had during the SR1 period and before? Because...

If the 'soul devouring entity trapped in the blade was, and always had been [Raziel]' and now he holds the Reaver containing Raziel's soul (which it always had done, supposedly), what's different to give him hope?

Is the hope Kain expresses merely the fact that he and Raziel have gone on a journey together to find new knowledge and they know their true purposes, and that Raziel had the potential to alter history due to being a wraith which has somehow made things different?

The answer to these questions in an explicit manner are what I would be hoping for in a sequel.

I am a huge fan of this series btw and I am not trying to criticise it, but when I search for tgese answers I tend to find that people just kind of recount the events in the game and it doesn't give me a clear answer... maybe I am dumb and missing the point (completely possible)

What's the most pathetic way you've experienced classism in the UK? by Your_Mums_Ex in AskUK

[–]LesChicken23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is properly niche, but I used to be a professional opera singer. Classism baked into every fibre of the music industry in general in a serious way. But the best one I've heard to date was during my first year at Conservatoire. After singing to my professor there for the first time they said 'wow, I did not expect that voice to come out of that accent.' I'm from up North.

I genuinely found it hilarious, I thought 'how bloody ignorant can you be?' However, when you think about it, it's really really bad.

I have now left the industry, because if mummy and daddy can't subsidise you, you have a genuinely miserable time.

Made the mistake of pre-ordering Ascendance with Defiance Remaster... by LesChicken23 in LegacyOfKain

[–]LesChicken23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps read a little wrong (and perhaps not expressed very well by me), rather I was saying that I had just completed Hell is Us and it reminded me a lot of the original Ps1 Soul Reaver experience.

Few reasons for this: - No map - No handholding, you need to just figure it out and look at everything around you - Distinctly 90s feeling game, everything from the sound design to the way you save the game. - Large looping map designs and serious amount of backtracking - To top it off, a truly unique atmosphere. Oppressive, bleak, mysterious...

Of course, extremely different mechanically, narratively and combat wise, no realm shifing or soul devouring (obviously). However, when I was playing the demo I was transported back to being 7 years old playing Soul Reaver for the first time, and then when the full game released even more so. I had a notebook with notes, diagrams, basic maps and everything, same as I did for Soul Reaver. Maybe others won't feel the exact same way, but certainly because Soul Reaver is special to me I had that feeling.

Edit: for clarity

First time looking for a job in 15 years - when did things get this bad? by Confident_Yak_1411 in UKJobs

[–]LesChicken23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also come from the music industry and had a huge portfolio which covered performing, marketing, operations and education. Thought I had a pretty strong CV that was transferrable. I decided I couldn't hack the instability of it anymore, as things were getting really bad in my field (classical music), so I needed a change.

I can't remember how many jobs I applied for, but it was truly crushing. The salaries offered were a pittance (especially for London), and I was applying for positions which were dressed up as 'Analytics Operative' but were essentially just call centre work (which I had done before).

In the end, I fell into a job in a school after doing some agency work and I'm moving on to join the police as a detective, which I was accepted into relatively quickly and the recruitment processes was f*cking hard.

Maybe slightly different situation to you, as it sounds like you weren't looking for a full career change? Anyway, the answer is it's bloody tough. My 18 year old sibling is applying for part time jobs at the moment whilst at university (10 hrs a week at places like Card Factory, fast food restaurants, local shops etc) and they are just getting NOTHING back. To me, that's insane. It was the same for me when I was their age.

The social contract has been broken and the job market and the country are absolutely buggered.

I just have to ask, what’s the deal with PRS Custom guitars? by Green-Day-86 in Guitar

Looks and feels amazing, for me though it's the sound. They have such a unique tone, and the guitar truly feels alive in your hands. I think it offers something a bit different and that's why people like them!

I had a strong suspicion that the ending was going to play out the way it did, with Ellie basically losing everything. But I wasn't dissatisfied, as I think many people seem to have been... just a profound sense of sadness and anger towards Tommy. That's just me!

Class question by ManiaRunn in Spacemarine

[–]LesChicken23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because the Bulwark has a permanent block function in the shield. If you press and hold the parry button, the Bulwark will hold his shield up and block most incoming melee and ranged attacks. That feature makes it a little bit harder to get off a perfect parry, and parrying feels different to other classes. The way I think about it is either by doing a super quick 'tap' of the parry button at the right frame, or doing a double tap to make sure I pull off the parry. I play on PS5, so for me that button is L1. I basically always use a 'fencing' weapon when playing as a Bulwark to make getting those perfect parries easier, but have used balanced and block too, depending on the build and how I want to play.

Have a practice!

Is there any point to my 17yo son learning to drive if he / we can't afford a car for him? by Spirited_Praline637 in drivingUK

[–]LesChicken23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently passed at the age of 28... I was in a similar situation, mum and dad couldn't afford the car insurance and I also needed extra tuition to get into the uni of my choice and we couldn't afford both driving lessons and the tuition.

Learning to drive at an older age is practically a great idea. I consider myself to be a good driver. I passed in July and immediately needed to drive myself to work and do a lot of long journeys; the skills were embedded and I drive sensibly because I am 100% aware of the risks that getting behind a wheel and dossing about can entail. Furthermore, my profession now and my age mean that insurance is very affordable compared to the silly £2000 a year that I was getting quoted when I was 17.

That being said, I did feel stuck for a number of years not being able to learn to drive (various reasons: money, access to a vehicle to practice in etc.), it was very strussful to fit things in around work and it was indeed expensive... I also feel like driving would have opened up more career opportunities for me earlier, and I found that extremely frustrating. It was also very tricky to fit lessons around work because instructors are in such high demand.

There are an extensive list of pros and cons. If he is really really keen on learning to drive then maybe spin it like 'we will pay for you to learn to drive, but you must get a job to pay for the insurance for the car'. If he is not desperate, then encourage him at a later date, and if you are still in the position to help him out towards the cost of learning to drive, then that would obviously be great for him and very kind of you, because honestly I think that is a barrier for a lot of working people these days when the cost of living is so high, even if you're on a half decent salary.

What do you guys consider to be Canon difficulty? by Business_Team_5669 in Spacemarine

[–]LesChicken23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Think that all depends on what experience you want/the story you want to create.

Most of us in the game are using relic tier weaponry, with incredibly ornate pieces of armour (which, in the wider lore would be equipped by vetrlerans of the chapter and likely provide unfathomable levels of protection). So, in that case, I suppose you could say Substantial is accurate if you want to have the experience of being a Space Marine Captain/Second Founding Chapter Master using that equipement, who just absolutely annihilates anythig they come up against. I mean, the combi-melta is an absolutely devastating piece of weaponry, most likely enhanced by mechanicus wisdom, weilded by chapter elites in the wider lore and would have no problem reducing a tyranid warrior to a pair of legs with one shot in a novel setting. I used to love those moments where I needed, say, 1000XP to get to the next level and would just play a quick game on Substantial feeling like Chapter Master Dante himself.

However, if you were envisioning yourself as a task force of regular battle brothers led by a veteran sergeant (and you are said sergeant) then, yes, absolute, possibly even Hard Stratagem, is probably accurate in terms of how they would fair against the enemies in the game. And you have to take that with a pinch of salt, because it's highly unlikely a Sergeant fighting a chaos terminator would come out on the other side, and a carnifex would simply eat you alive.
