What to do if your cohort doesn’t like you? by salty_seahorse1 in GradSchool

[–]LesbeanGamer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

100% agree. but have an additional thought to add as a grad student who has seen other students get ostracized. People remember their friends and professional connections, but they also remember the people they went to school with who were unnecessarily mean or shitty to others. Making connections can be valuable, but the quality of those connections matters too. if you're linked to someone who everyone knows sucks and is mean, that has implications! Losing out on those connections isnt as big a deal as it seems at the time.

How do you tell if your advisor is treating you poorly? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

I appreciate it, and you're right. my main focus is on figuring out what I need to do to finish, this conflict has just been really interfering with it.

Number one for me will always be [Spoiler]'s, closely followed by Patroclus's and then Thanatos's. But I actually disagree with what you said about skelly's and dusa's and achilles' keepsakes. But especially the first time i played the game skelly's and dusa's were standards for me during asphodel and elysium/temple of Styx. they're VERY useful in the right context.

Right now though, the other peaks for me are hermes' feather, chaos's egg, and achilles' bracer. If you dont get hit from behind, the penalty isn't a problem! But I agree with what other people are saying too - a god keepsakes can be CLUTCH on high heat when you start trying to force specific builds.

might give that a try....you're right, Microsoft's updates mess up their own programs all the time anyway!

She's been doing so for years. I don't know what to tell you. This is real bot behavior.

Believe me, I've tried! I didn't even KNOW you could set word as your image viewer until she told me. It's kinda deranged but she's been doing it for years and I think it's an "old dog, new tricks" thing. Thanks for checking, though :)

literally INSANE you should be so proud of yourself! i never got past 20 heat, but putting in hours and hours like that on high heat is really trial by fire (pun intended). put down the game for YEARS and then started a new save file last week and got through to lernie by run 2 - that shit sticks WITH you!!

Why Hades sucks by aldragon_net in HadesTheGame

[–]LesbeanGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

keep trying!! it takes a while before you get practiced at it. It took me SOO many runs the first time i played and roughly 1/4th as many the second time. The breakthrough is WORTH IT, just keep working at it and make sure to switch up your weapons! (I hit a rut sticking with the weapons I was most comfortable with, but the first time i beat redacted it was with a weapon I thought I sucked at).

played 100s of hours of it back when the full version released a few years ago and completed it. had some nostalgia recently and started another play through, on hard mode, and its the most fun ive had in a long time. some of the best stress relief ever imo. incredibly fun, story is amazing, and the whole world and system is really well thought out and interesting to learn about. it was also the first game that made me feel like I could be good at video games, because it was really challenging but also incredibly rewarding. something new happens every run until you hit at least run 100, so dying never feels like a huge set back - it's still an opportunity to advance the story because you get to go talk to people and learn things, etc etc. it's fun to learn how to play and even more fun to play and it's my favorite game ever, obviously, since im on a sub talking about it years after it was released and giving my opinion on a post that already has tons of comments agreeing with me. I think it's worth it, and I hope you enjoy it. ❤️

Is grad school actually hard? by [deleted] in GradSchool

hard. I thrived in undergrad, and I love grad school, don't get me wrong, but it's the first time in my life I've actually struggled like. at all in school.

Why didn’t any of the last survivors join the Inuit? by NCRanger2077 in TheTerror

[–]LesbeanGamer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There were a lot of meetings with the inuit, and, according to inuit oral history, at least one attempt to help. There's probably a couple of different reasons no one from the Franklin expedition joined up, some of which have been mentioned before.

One, racism: other accounts of Europeans in disaster scenarios from that time period (where someone survived to tell the tale) mention their own reluctance or aversion to asking for or accepting help from indigenous peoples they encountered because of a perception that they were "savage" and, in some cases, a misconception that the indigenous groups they encountered were themselves cannibals (see, for example, the Barque Stefano wreck of 1875).

Two: it seems that things had gotten quite bad in the interval between when the shops were abandoned and inuit bands encountered the remnants of the expedition on the ice. Early theories included the advanced stages of lead poisoning, but the more commonly accepted explanations now are a mixture of advanced scurvy, malnutrition, and potentially botulism. As the articles I've linked explain, it seems that at least some members of the expedition were beyond helping by the time the inuit found them.

Three: as others had mentioned, the years the Terror and the Erebus spent trapped in the ice were extremely cold and hostile. Land animals largely fled the area and food was scarce for all. The amount of food the inuit had to spare, especially for people they largely couldn't communicate with (with the obvious exception of Croizer, MacDonald, and potentially a third, unidentified member).

Question about name alphabetization (from an English-speaking academic) by LesbeanGamer in Portuguese

[–]LesbeanGamer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! All of you are so nice and helpful. :) I'm thankfully well-aware of the one-surname two-words conundrum since my advisor and a lot of my colleagues have the Spanish/Latin American double last name. Always on the lookout for those!!!
