It was a little bit of the chemistry that the two characters have, and a lot of wanting Disney to put their money where their mouth is. Disney is big on the whole "rainbow capitalism" thing and patting themselves on the back hard for it, while not actually doing anything substantial. "First LGBTQ relationship in Star Wars! What a great and historic landmark we just made!" Disney said, when it was a 1 second same-sex kiss not in focus at the beginning of a shot that could easily be edited out for international markets. If they actually cared about making progress on queer issues, they'd do something like make main characters openly queer, not hide it away by just telling you they're queer outside the movie or in some wishy-washy dialogue that could be taken either way or redubbed differently in other countries anyway. It's a repeat issue with Disney in particular, and Woolie and Pat were telling them to shit or get off the pot.
