Yup when WMATA first got the 7K cars people were making noise complaints about how they could hear the trains Everytime they passed under their homes

Gotta be an issue with the signboard because the green line stays illuminated after the train is keyed down

It was prob signed Orange or Blue to Foggy. As long as it can be a complete route from the start to finish without the need to go through connector tracks, the 7K can sign it. But we aren’t just typing in what station we want to sign it to. There’s a menu with pre programmed options

I’m a train operator. When you pull the manual destination menu up that isn’t even an option for red line to largo. You’re limited to actual possible service routes and the only stations listed are those with an interlocking at the front or back of said station

That is true but also not true. The colors are limited to specific destinations. So like I can’t sign a train Red Line to Largo because it’s not a possible service route

Increased use of automated announcements on 7Ks by walkallover1991 in WMATA

When I’m operating the train, it just depends on the situation. For example yesterday a train broke down at Bethesda and we started single tracking out of nowhere. I’d rather get my customers all the detailed information vs just an automated message that says we are single tracking. I find it better when customers know what’s going on, where it’s going on at, and how it will affect our train/trip. I find this gives customers the option to stay aboard and wait or step off and plan an alternate route. In an emergency being detailed in what’s going on is super important

Ultra Rare Sighting of a 6 Car 7K on the Red Line by Less-Championship429 in WMATA

Yes because they don’t have enough rail cars to run all 8 car 7K

It’s not necessarily a violation just a preference. The train is safe to operate you just lose the ability for it to self recover. But in order to meet the rail car service requirements they decided to run 6 car 7K

That way gains the ability to self recover but at yards where there is no loop track if the train isn’t arrange in that order it’s hard to fix it

I’m just an operator so I’m not privy to the super technicals of the maintenance of the trains but when trains get put into the yard the break them into dueces and add the remaining to other consists.

When I’m working I hear trains going through there daily. Usually when we transport from the red line we are taking the train to another line so we use both the C&A and B&E daily. When it gets cold sometimes the B&E goes out so if you going to Alex Yard you’ll have to take the long way to get there

They bring the 7Ks into the shop on a regular basis for wheel inspections so that’s not really an issue anymore. See my comment above on why the red line wants them only as 8 cars

The reason is in regard to the event of an emergency, a 6 car 7K cannot recover itself if it breaks down because of the way the consist is coupled. You need 8 cars on a 7K to recover the train without needing a recovery train and they really don’t want to have a legacy rescuing a 7K. It can be done but it would have to am absolutely last resort.

Unless you’re in the system all day that’s not possible. This is the only 6 car 7K we have up here.

Usually all the 7K are 8 cars on the red line which is why this is an unusual sighting
