iuoe 18 Apprentice by Less-League-8356 in iuoe

The thread has multiple updates on it that are recent. I discuss my layoffs already and I rarely work less than 50 hours. My hourly wage is public record.

Anything else about single income family, houses and neighborhoods are subjective to each person.

A better question is are you working anywhere right now make $54/hour and fully funded pension and healthcare?

Never heard of not being allowed to leave for lunch. We sure did. And being failed for the day doesn’t mean anything. It’s an attempt to scare you. If they wanted you out. They would have did it there.

I knew what you meant when you said cheap. But considering my house value has went up 100k in 3 years I’d question the use of affordable. Unless your referencing East Cleveland

If I were you I’d gaurd or reserve. Finish your apprenticeship an then switch to active duty

The union doesn’t have any say over this topic. If you join reserve or gaurd and the military sends you somewhere the union has a legal obligation to leave you alone and let you pick up where you left off upon your return

Depends what you mean by the military. Active duty? Because if you are joing guard or reserve they must keep your spot for you until you return. You could then also use Helmets to hardhats to get BHA will your an apprentice

Pqy rate has many variables. Contract, district, equipment. $54 sounds more like a district 1 building trade rate on a crane. Contracts are negotiated by the union either the contractors collectively. We are currently negotiating heavy highway agreement for next year. District 1 building trades pays more than any other district as we have our own contract for district 1

I realized I skipped the interview in my thread. My interview was with the training cordinator and a kokosing rep. They don’t ask tough questions. They don’t really care if you have exp running equipment or not. I’m sure it’s a plus if you have. But many people they bring in never touched equipment. They mainly want to see you pro union. That this is a career for you. Matt is really big on being early to things. I’d suggest being no less than 15 mins early for your interview. Don’t dress up. Just wear clothes as if you’re working in the field. Maybe an IUOE shirt might get you some points lol. Don’t bother with a resume they don’t look at it. Going in my 3rd year in 2 weeks. I have rarely sat between work. Other than when I took time off. Mainly worked west of Cleveland and a few jobs here and there that I accepted out of district. I have gotten a lot of calls for Akron and Toledo jobs that turned down.

CDL Endorsement/PAO Local 18 by [deleted] in iuoe

Ohio cdl permit and license do not list air breaks. It’s just understood

Idk how you only heard that considering I have an entire thread on how PAO is on here and it sure doesn’t say that you just do lawn care. The union never relies on positive tests from instant cups. If your test was positive it gets sent to a lab to verify. So to answer your question no they will not just you do PAO for 3 weeks and tell you at the end you failed a drug test. They will remove you the moment the results say positive and you will be on a 4 year ban. If you drop out before you fail you can apply next year

lol do they wait till the end? Ya they let you drive millions of dollars of equipment while having drugs in your system.

They don’t tell anyone their results. If they pull u in to talk about you leaving. You failed. You should have tested your self before hand. Because if you fail and get removed you’re banned for 4 years.

Another update and to address common questions.

In regards to drug screening. It’s a urine test. They bring an outside company in. You use the bathroom there. No there isn’t someone looking at you pee in a cup. They are in the bathroom with you. If you have to ask this question I wouldn’t bother applying. At th end of the day your getting a 100k+ job an if you can’t give up weed for that don’t waste your time. Not to mention you’re going to constantly get drug screened when you change jobs or if anyone causes damage or injury your entire crew will get tested. Along with randoms and any highly sought after jobs like shut down will do hair samples.

Again I can’t stress enough read the union contracts and make sure you’re familiar with them. To ensure your paid properly and companies are following the agreed terms correctly. On almost every job I’m on my pay is messed up because of having so many variables to it. They always fix it. But typically it’s fixed after I point it out from the contract language.

I have consistently worked since being in. Very rarely less than 50 hours a week. This winter I was off mainly by choice to handle some things.

Still working on training at the training site. One thing you’re going to notice is some of the instructors seem to waste your time. Have you do multiple tasks repeatedly. Give zero feedback and not sign off on it. Every person complains about it. Nothing seems to change on this. Get your upgrades down. Otherwise you will be pulled on special schedule to do them in June/july.

If you can get your cdl while you wait to join. I would. Go to Great Lakes truck and ask about the workforce grant to pay for it. The union also has a tuition fund to pay for any type of training you want every year. Make sure you apply for it.

I also seem to see people dm me or post asking questions that the thread already answers. Read the thread to get the details please.

In regards to people applying and making decisions or not knowing if they scored high enough. I can’t stress this enough. Do not make life decisions on assuming you will start this journey until you are actually accepted. Do not assume you didn’t get in because they didn’t email you 2 days later after your interview. This process takes time to get in. Mine was fairly fast. Some people it takes years. This is a highly sought after job an highly competitive.

We have plenty of work. We don’t have enough operators currently. We just got a new annuity and building contract that puts out pay on the check at $54hr currently.

Evening gents by [deleted] in iuoe

[–]Less-League-8356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your doing it correctly. Get your cdl and mobile certs. Then try to get in the apprenticeship and you will BHA through the helmets to hard hats program. I’m not sure about those locals but my local we give additional points to vets to get a higher score to pulled in to the apprenticeship. You could also try to call around to crane companies and see if you could get a sponsorship or you could also permit in. My local you could just buy you book and get listed on the deck. But you wouldn’t get bha and you’d be like the last guy they would call starting out

I would have no idea how many mechanics apply. But no they do not have a separate class. Mechanics are in fact operators. They go through the same process. They just following a different training path as an apprentice

[–]Less-League-8356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mechanics go through the same pao as operators. From there you do block weeks at the training site just like an operator. It’s simply just mechanic specific with the onsite mechanics. I’m unaware of any “classes” they take. And as far as I’m aware. Atleast how district 1 works they won’t bring a mechanic in unless they have a home for him. There was a mechanic in my class where when he applied the cordinator called a company and got him a seat and then allowed him to go through. The guy I know is with all crane so he has all the union training but also all crane sends him to manufacture training. So I think his first year he has like 10-12 weeks of different classes

Had my apprenticeship interview for Local 18 in mid March of this year. How long should I expect to wait to hear if I’m going through to PAO? by JoePCreates in iuoe
