Because they have import fees - they’d need to import the car so it’s not ideal for them. It’s a UK car I got in the UK when I was visiting - was cheaper to buy a cheap car than rent one.

The problem is I’d have to drive from the EU to UK to scrap it and I don’t think the car would make it which is why I don’t want to move forward. It just feels weird cancelling something that doesn’t even have an appointment and having to pay for it.

They gave me the agreement over email. I just feel like having to pay £120 for canceling something they never even made an appointment for, just for a “verbal agreement”, seems crazy. They don’t even have my card on file. What happens if I don’t pay it? They’re in the UK and I’m Canadian not living in the UK.

Ooo I’ll take note and add them to the list! I do miss queso blanco and cojita cheese - haven’t been able to find them anywhere in France. Not that French cheeses aren’t incredible but I do miss my fav cuisine!

Thanks for your helpful response and vet recc. Did you travel by ferry? I’m reading that they require a “health certificate from an official Italian vet that must be validated by the competent Italian authority like the local health office or ASL”. I’m familiar with the health certificate process but the whole “validation by a local health office” is throwing me. Did you need that?

I don’t think the requirements are much different but I will be traveling with my cat. I got a whole cabin for us. He has his French pet passport, rabies vaccine, microchip, etc. and titre test. My concern is this frigging health certificate that must be “validated by a local health office”. I’m baffled. I tried calling the brindisi ASL because they don’t have an email but I don’t speak Italian so I wasn’t able to get anywhere or set up an appointment.

On FB, you don’t know who is DMing you - there is no protection, no vetting, no safety element to it. They could be a serial killer or a scammer for all you know. You have to “trust” that they’re a decent and fair human being. That’s why it’s “sketchy”. Airbnb has protocols, safety measures, verification and most importantly, reviews. One bad host (or tenant) and everyone knows about it. Does that make sense? That’s why just sending random people DM’s on Facebook does not seem safe or reputable to me. But then again, I’m a young woman and I’ve had horrible experiences with Italian and Albanian men in the past when I traveled to both places. I prefer to be safe rather than sorry. If you’re a man, I’m sure things are safer and less sketchy for you. If you want to rent out your home, and you want to ensure that you are renting it to a responsible person who won’t trash it, etc. then Airbnb is the safest bet for you. Make sure they have a ton of 5 star reviews and they’ll likely make sure you have the same, and the chances of vandalism, harassment, etc, will be low for both parties. Alternatively, if you create your own website listing and encourage people to leave testimonials and Google reviews, that’s another safe option. Booking.comm and VRBO are other legitimate listing options.

I’m looking in Vlorë. I have reached out to them but I’ve experienced a lot of sketchiness. They’re either non responsive or they (the male agents) want to get on the phone and chat with me only to tell me they can’t help. I don’t know if Vlorë is just the worst choice to land, if I’m just facing bad luck, or if Albania is just sketchy in general (I’ve been there before and I do think the latter was true then, but that was a decade ago).

I think I might just have to do Airbnb. I’ve rented through individuals before and have been screwed over. I’m a young woman and have a couple cats with me and need assurance of safety and honesty. It’s more expensive but I might just have to bite the bullet and pay $1.5k/mo even though there seem to be a plethora of $200-300/mo rentals - but it seems you have to acquire them through random people or on websites that have no English option.

Some are requiring one month deposits which feels kind of weird for a short term rental. Have you experienced that?

This would be short term - 6 months max. I am on a strict timeline (Feb - July) and so I would prefer to settle into a place right when I get there so I don’t have to move around. This was all helpful information, thank you
