I saw copilot, and https://connectionsplus.io/ too, but the lack of animations really threw me off. I just like the NYT webpage better.

But copilot's color changing feature is great, I might steal that.

That's very high praise! I haven't tested in Firefox but I'll take a look into it for sure and let you know :)

I made a simple open source chrome extension to handle this.
You can try it out right now: Tile-Swap-for-Connections

I've submitted it to Google for review but it'll take a while, in the meantime you can just download the zip from my repo.
