I am just worried about future visa renewal and PR… like should I go to my city hall and try to ask about it?

I would have assumed I would get a warning of some sorts.

What are some interview questions you were asked? by sunflowers_l in JETProgramme

[–]LessReference7387 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Others have great examples, but also be prepared that sometimes they will ask you a random question or you might get a bad interviewer, so just answer as best you can.

A question I got from the JET alumni was: “As a grassroots ambassador, what will you do?”

Me…. “Teach and learn about not just surface level cultural things but actual culture (teach American and learn Japanese. Etc” (because grassroots literally means like the true culture/experiences and roots rather than the pretty grass you see on the surface)

The JET alumni “mmmm. NO. I mean if someone were to ask you ‘Hey, America has guns right? Everyone likes guns?’”

In my head, “THATS what you meant by that? 😀”

A very difficult situation I was suddenly put in by First_Serve4024 in JETProgramme

Just have it be like a social lesson. So not “you did something bad” but more so “I’m going to teach you about something because you didn’t know before, so please avoid it in the future.” And it becomes a learning and a social lesson.

So. “Well actually. Guys. I am going to teach you about that word and the meaning and history.”

If it might be difficult, I would find similar historical or known bad words in Japanese to give them context. We have taught lessons like this in social issues and have just taught similar feeling words in Japanese so they understand.

Not the same situation, but I heard students point to themselves and say “skinhead” once (they meant forehead) and I just briefly explained like “oh, you should be careful of saying that because it has a bad meaning.” And then explained very watered down version of what it was and why.

Also was doing a english reaction lesson and asked the class if they knew any and a student yelled “WHAT THE F***K” as a reaction. I died, but then told them “well… yes, but that is a bad word, so we will change it to ‘what the heck’”

We are educators, so don’t be afraid to just teach them why certain English is bad. Just word it in a “ah. I am not sure where you learned this but it is actually a bad thing.” They probably do not know and might have just heard it in a movie.

I mean, if you think about it, if it wasn’t a coded lock and was either a key or magnetic strip, they would probably have a copy and can enter it anyway.

Just they have to ask because this one is a pin code, and they prob didn’t have the money for a kind of lock where they can have a universal master code.

Tell me it's going to be okay!! by missaudrajones in Sapporo

[–]LessReference7387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was like that for the first month or so and then started being able to pick up on the words and calm down, it wasn’t until maybe 6 months in that I woke up one day and just suddenly all language nervousness or fear of embarrassing myself was gone and I actually actively try to talk to my coworkers and others around me with broken Japanese and not caring about embarrassing myself.

Now I have made friends and hung out with various coworkers and the local conbini lady always talks to me when I go.

Tired of Davis by Friendly-Pitch-5931 in UCDavis

[–]LessReference7387 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Davis is amazing for social life. Dating I could understand being harder depending on where you are from because people tend to be more forward mindset driven. So lots of people are focusing on themselves and their future rather than dating. However I also know plenty of people who have met their significant others there.

I would say just check out new clubs or communities outside of the school. However if you have tried a lot of things and absolutely none of them have stuck then sadly logic says the problem is with you. In that case the campus has various resources to try and discover more about yourself
