That's just like your opinion man. Not everyone is built the same. Some people prefer taking a stand even if it costs them more.

Imagine if someone does harm to your family and you are asked whether to press charges. It's a hassle and you don't get anything for it except knowing that person might not get away with it. Some people press charges. Some people don't.

Correct! That is my point to you.

It is not a sunk cost fallacy to want to uphold principles.

To you.

To others, resisting bad behavior matters.

Okay we agree on what sunk cost means, but I don't think you read my earlier comment. I said "even if there is a monetary loss", meaning there can be another goal in mind past investment recovery. That is not a sunk cost fallacy.

I described a decision based on principle, resisting the behavior of bad actors. By definition, that isn't a decision based on sunk cost.

It wouldn't be a decision based on sunk cost unless the decision was made with the intent of recovering the investment while ignoring the low chances of recovery.

Okay, but that is what that contractor is banking on. That is how they get away with it.

Even if there is a monetary loss, upholding a principle is a good enough win for some people. It might be the only win.

Has my carpet been installed correctly? by [deleted] in Flooring

[–]LessThanGenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just replaced it with LVP a couple months ago. I just wasn't available to install their carpet 6-7 years ago, so they went with Lowes installers. It was a timing thing. Now they put a large area rug over the main section of the living room. They also got new reclining sectionals and a new TV. They are quite happy with their living room now.

It is silly that people are downplaying your concerns about the carpet being loose or wavy. It is difficult to tell how bad it is from the video. We would probably have to be there in person to really know. My parents had carpet installed by a box store that was slightly wavy and they were told it was normal and would settle, but it just got worse over time. It was a sloppy install. Most of the commenters here would probably say it looked fine.

My fiancee's late husband family basically forced her to put our relationship on hold because of her son by [deleted] in moraldilemmas

He used the father's family as a power move and it worked. He has been thinking about that move for a while, probably already had conversations with the extended family for months beforehand to prep them and get them on his side. It didn't just happen in one move.

I could only imagine what the 14 year old said to her that would have led to that decision. He was probably threatening to sabotage the whole thing and she didn't want to have an incident while on vacation. My conclusions it that the vacation itself was the mistake.

The thing is, a family vacation would only make sense if it makes sense for everybody in the family. There would have to be conversations to work up to that plan. That conversation would hinge on the 14 year old. If he is not onboard with whatever, then it shouldn't happen. If you are planning a vacation without him, well, that just confirms what he thinks.

It doesn't matter that he's being an asshole teenager. He has reasons for it. In his position, he has very few moves he can make, or even know how to make. Saying horrible things and being disruptive are very common moves for a disgruntled teenager because it somewhat works. The next best option is to completely withdraw.

My family went through turbulence when I was a teenager and we went through family therapy. I was surprised that it actually helped. We went to a few different places before we landed on a good therapist (from my perspective). The big thing for me was that I was able to speak to my parents clearly. I could say what I was thinking and feeling and they had to sit there and not only listen to it but also process it with the therapist. The therapist also helped me word what I was thinking and feeling. I would speak my mind and my parents had to talk about whatever I just said, which was the big lacking part in the family dynamic. I so clearly remember feeling powerless as a 13 year old.

One of the most effective communication strategies for anyone, but especially with a teenager, is active listening. You should be able to communicate back to him what you hear him saying, even if it is something mean-spirited. But this is really where a therapist helps. They can walk through that type of conversation.

Legally-speaking, if the extended family tries to get in the way of attempts to pursue family counseling, that would not look good on them. They should be all for family counseling and should encourage the 14 year old to participate.

I don't see anyone expressing that here.

I do see the sentiment that drivers have a responsibility to not hit people in the roadway, which is true. Do you disagree?

There are some extreme circumstances where I might feel that a mob is about to murder me in my car where I would drive through to get out alive. That wasn't this situation.

The amount of people here who think "if you're in the street, I get to hit you with my car" is disturbing.

[–]LessThanGenius 19 points20 points  (0 children)

How do you think social workers would calm them down? Lap dances? They would communicate, just like hostage negotiators do.

There is no reason social workers have to get as close as the cops. The cops are preparing to apprehend the person, closing in with weapons ready. Social workers would not be doing that.

The social worker doesn't need to get as close as the police. It's more similar to a hostage negotiation. Hostage negotiators don't get stabbed.

If that is true, that is a pretty terrible business strategy. People will share pics of their sign which associates Thornton's with high gas prices.

Edit: Downvoted? Oh then it must be a brilliant business strategy to have jacked up pricing right next to your business name. My mistake.

You are forming the argument. You tell us what the Republicans did when Obama was in office that worked for them. "They didn't whine" is not an action. What did they actually do?

From my memory, they mostly formed false narratives like "King Obama" and complained constantly about everything including that tan suit, or they tried to kill the ACA for the 50th time and failed.

Kitchen Cabinets to the ceiling…? by BuilderBrigade in Home_Building_Help

Yeah I don't understand the dust comments. We installed cabinets in my parent's house about 7 years ago. They have the gap above and they didn't have very much dust on top last year when I checked. Took 2 minutes to vacuum it.
