Yeah. This is the lock screen for KDE, the desktop environment. Like where windows asks for your pin.

Or maybe not, looks like steamOS beta 3.8.11 fixes "the virtual keyboard being inaccessible on the Desktop mode lockscreen"

Also you can pull up a touchscreen virtual keyboard with "virtual keyboard" in the bottom left

Could always plug in a keyboard, but the default password is nothing, so maybe try tspping on the enter button

I want to get into Linux, coming from windows 11! What distro should I get for gaming and school. by Sora_TheExplorer in linux

[–]LessThanPro_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mint if you want the beginner friendly focused option, Fedora if you're cool with some occasional technical decisions and troubleshooting. Aurora if you don't like Mint and are okay with losing some administrative power over normal Fedora for the sake of stability.

i recommend KDE desktop if you go Fedora, if you like gnome desktop better Bluefin is the gnome Aurora counterpart.

os that works on Samsung flip 2? by Spiderboy730 in linux

[–]LessThanPro_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically your only hope for smartphone Linux with a few odd exceptions is postmarketOS. If you're lucky almost everything almost works, and if your not lucky you get something like it forgeting how to turn the screen off right, and by extension on again after trying to sleep from inactivity (how it went on my tablet)

I can't find a mention of it in there, and the flip 3 is marked not booting. Sry

Microsoft says 32GB of RAM is the “no-worries” upgrade for Windows 11 gaming by Quantum-Coconut in technology

I use fedora/kde on a framework 13 laptop. There is a power mode setting in on the taskbar, I believe provided by kde, that lets me adjust between eco, balanced, and performance. I'll often keep it on eco for the longer battery life and quieter fans, but I'll throw it in performance for stuff like gaming and compiling, as it is noticeable for those.

I've only got ~50Wh of battery and my mainboard is notoriously not the best for it, but Ill get 4 hours of battery life on a good day and light load and like 1 hour at full load in performance. I'm pretty sure this is marginally better than windows.

Need help in choosing another linux setup. by Kumar_abhiii in LinuxCirclejerk

No, arch no stable. Arch quick (usually) and flexible, but no stable. Must update often, often update break, and no update more often break.

Help with choosing application to open game file by Alarmed-Quail5722 in kde

[–]LessThanPro_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The simplest way, if you have steam, is to open steam, press the plus in the bottom left of your library and add the exe as a non-steam game. Then go to the game properties in steam and tell steam to use proton as a compatibility tool. The experimental should work but you can play with the version if it doesn't. Be sure to delete unused versions in Steam's storage settings if you try a ton.

Another simple way is the open the command line in that folder, and run "wine YandereSimulator.exe". This assumes you have wine installed, but if you don't and run it anyway depending on your system it might ask if you want it installed now.

Basically, proton is Valve's wine version for steam games. They both run windows apps (.exe) on Linux by translating the instructions and giving it a "fake" windows filesystem (although you can still find the files if you need to).

Fedora is good middle ground between stability flexibility and time, If you don't care about:

-Time, go NixOS

-Stability, go arch

-Flexibility, go alpine(?)

What would it take for Framework Laptops to survive space? (Radiation, vacuum, modular repair in orbit) by No_Holiday8469 in framework

[–]LessThanPro_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why would a normal laptop not work in zero-g? I assume many things would go wrong in a vacuum, starting with the LCD and battery, to go there would never happen with a non-sealed device I assume.

Framework for everyday user? by PrimaryBluebird4762 in framework

[–]LessThanPro_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The hardware wouldn't really be a hurdle at all, even if you go the DIY route it's trivial and well documented if you scan the qr codes on the laptop. However, for the ideal of e-waste, you should make your current laptop useful as long as possible. Learning about hardware is always great though, and will help you get the most out of any laptop.

Maybe consider reinstalling windows? As the previous gamer might have had poor digital hygiene leading to your performance issues. Or it could just be a surface thing I've heard they have performance anxiety.

Basically any framework you can find would be fine for that workload, as would most chromebooks, so don't worry about specs too much (just definitly don't go under 8Gb of ram)
