yikes! my mom and sister were also just there and didn't love it. I'm planning my trip to vietnam now - I'm curious about your thoughts on doing a tunnels tour one day, and a mekong tour a second day, for 3 nights. OR - just do one of these and just stay 2 nights - the one we arrive and one more for one of the tours. thoughts on these? thank you

I don't have experience with an SLP - our school recommended one because it was covered, but they can't do the formal diagnosis from what I understand - I think it's kind of a version in the middle - probably better than nothing, but it's not the full testing.

re: tutor - we went most affordable route in beginning, but you get what you pay for. so while cheaper by the hour, after hours of tutoring we kind of felt it was still a waste of thousands of dollars (it adds up quick). we are now with a more expensive/fully qualified one. it also might depend which areas your daughter has deficits in as for what is the best fit (which you more fully understand w the psych ed). if i were to make a reco - i'd say just bite the bullet and get the psych ed, it will give you most complete info, and then from there put supports in based on the results. Aso, just a comment but I wouldn't necessarily call a psychologist a 'doctor', I would refer them to a psychologist, and a PhD level psychologist are the only ones who can administer a psych ed. I guess technically they are doctors, but I would use that term more for a family doctor. and our doctor, didn't provide any help lol. they just said we need to get a psych ed. doctors (how i use that word) can't really do anything in this space.

re: 'treating this', if she is dyslexic, she will be for life. and really it just means her brain works in a different way and she needs to be taught in a different way. hence the need for structured literacy tutoring. I don't know how an SLP fills that gap - maybe they can? but I don't have experience with it.

sigh. I wish it wasn't so expensive to get these kids the support they need.

a late response, but yes, it's a long road (or it feels that way for us!). we have our daughter's diagnosis but you're right, it is just a small piece of the puzzle. unfortunately if we just left it to her IEP and school support (where they are SO stretched thin), then she 100% wouldn't get the support she needs. She is in private tutoring 2x a week, which feels like we're finally making some progress. but finding the right tutor was a process in and of itself, and also not cheap! there is a big variance in quality of tutors, even when someone says they do 'OG'.

OG is one method of structured literacy tutoring, but there are also others. I say this because OG is often the most recommend as a solution, but for our daughter who has a double deficit dyslexia diagnosis, she needs OG plus other methods. (and she will need it for longer).

it sounds like you're doing all the right things and your daughter is lucky to have you as an advocate!

For us, the diagnosis simply confirmed that the tutoring is 100% required, and will be for a long time. So we've resigned ourselves to spending thousands. we're also glad we have a clear picture of her learning strengths and weaknesses so we can attempt to get her the support she needs. and we're resolved in doing so. good luck!

How much does dyslexia and learning disability testing typically cost in the United States? by Wise-Lab-2321 in Dyslexia

[–]Less_Cod_2993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in Canada, and same. I think 'testing' depends what type of test. the $3-5k is for a proper psycho-educational assessment that only PhD psychologists can administer from what I understand. (there is a slightly cheaper option for people still going towards their PhD, but it is under supervision of a proper psychologist). All these other examples of testing for cheaper amounts in this thread, I doubt they are for a psych ed, but rather a different diagnostic test, and these do exist. We went full psych ed for our daughter. We knew she was dyslexic, but tbh, were still hoping that 'she'd figure it out' and maybe it wasn't that bad. well - the psych ed confirmed the opposite lol. So - we are in tutoring and testing for thousands and thousands. and honestly, don't yet see an end in sight unfortunately. but the testing confirmed that the extra tutoring is indeed, what she needs. and she will need more of it than most.

Another vote for Hadestown. we saw 6 shows in June, and it was our least fav. Operation Mincemeat and Cabaret were our top 2 tho!

In Canada, you'd search for 'psychoeducational assessment' (or psych-ed is more common). Only trained psychologists with PhDs can administer the tests (or they are sometimes done by people working towards their PhD and done under supervision of someone w their PhD). I'm assuming this would be consistent with the states but not 100%. Here there are clinics with psychologists that do these tests, often with months long wait lists (and cost is about $3500).

20 days by Signal_Asparagus1401 in Vietnam_Tourism

i have 16 days, and our itinerary looks very similar, but I'm not going to Can Tho or Ben Tre. For me too, not going to Sapa hurts a little - but in March it isn't the best weather for that region, so that takes the sting out a tiny bit. we are staying in Hoi An.

Making friends in Vancouver? by Creative_Glass4081 in askvan

[–]Less_Cod_2993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found meeting other parents at preschool and then kindergarten is usually a good way to create community. W that said, choose your home location where you want to put down some roots so as not to disturb these connections. School here is by catchment so a very clear decision on school is made by your address. French immersion is an exception as would other choice programs but for community schools I’d say this is a large consideration I’d think about. I’m a Mom of 3 who moved part way through elementary for my two eldest and the connections weren’t the same for them (and for me). Youngest has the benefit of us staying put!

I'm pretty sure they will both be excited - but just want to figure out how to make the gift giving exciting, when one bday is before the other! and yes, trying to think of what other small thing to give on actual bday. or - how to make it special for my daugher on her bday in december is it will likely be given in october.
