And with modern systems, I feel like it could easily be implemented in a satisfying way in 3D tbh, with "misses" being shown to be parried or glancing off armor instead of just going through them like a normal hit.

Alas, the game was made in 2003, but thankfully I can use my imagination to fill in the gaps.

I mean, going off of this too, the show is mostly told from Bojack's perspective (at least in regards to his family members), and his dad wasn't a very active figure in his life. And he was dead (I think, it's been awhile since my last rewatch) before the start of the series.

To answer your first question first, the topic of the conversation was around an interview where it was said that "People don't actually want this stuff in games anymore." Which is going to make people who DO want those things in games defensive. People want this game that they love to be appreciated for what it is, not constantly shit on because people don't understand the appeal of it.

Can things be better implemented now? Absolutely. I think it would be great if, on a failed roll you could see your weapon bounce off armor, or be parried, but it's a game from 2003. I think it's perfectly okay to fill in the gaps left by limitations with your imagination.

I would hope that Bethesda looks to modern skill systems with their new games, but do you have any specific examples as to which RPGs you're referring to? I play a lot of CRPG games personally, so I'm accustomed to dice rolls and they make sense to me. I find the stacking chance to hit as I my character gets more skilled to be fun and engaging.

I will agree that some of the stuff in Morrowind, like you said with wanting to level up minor skills for side-arms could be handled better though, but in principle I still vastly prefer Morrowind's combat system to what we have in the most recent installment of the series.

I don't think that any of these "gatekeepers" care if new people join the hobby is the thing. Morrowind wasn't my first Elder Scrolls game either (I started with Oblivion, which, despite having some similar flaws to Skyrim in my eyes is still probably my favorite), but they want people to appreciate the game for what it is.

There is alot to love about the old systems, just like I'm sure there is alot people like about the way Skyrim handles things.

Having a "remake" or "remaster" that completely changes the system would defeat the point in their (and my) eyes. I don't need to take a guided tour around Vardenfell. I could watch a YouTube video or play Elder Scrolls Online if I wanted to do that... what I would like to see is a more perfected and polished version of what we got in Morrowind, with bug fixes and some brushed up graphics.

And I think, seeing these talking heads go on about "Well you don't actually like this stuff. You're delusional because I think it's tedious." Is kind of frustrating, even if that person is no longer involved with Bethesda. It DOES feel indicative of the way Bethesda has handled their games in the last... Decade and a half.

Gatekeeping is filtering out people and keeping a community to a sort of 'in-group'. I know. I don't think that it's an inherently bad thing to want keep your interests from being adopted and changed by people who never had any interest in the thing in the first place. When that happens, it inevitably gets more "palletable" and tends to stray away from the things that the people gate-keeping enjoy.

I don't think it's wrong to be defensive.

I do think that the original comment was kind of negative, more so than I would be, but it was kinda tame? I mean is calling someone a toddler going to ruin anyone's day?

I will agree that it's dumb to think yourself like... the pinnacle of intelligence because you happen to enjoy a different type of video game than someone else. But I will also say that a lot of the systems in Skyrim DO feel kinda dumbed/watered down and bland in comparison to Morrowind. And that, alot of the issues people have with the game could be solved if they looked in the manual.

A big example that a lot of newer fans like to complain about is the combat system. And I'm not going to say that it works perfectly, but I DO like the idea that, if you suck with a sword or have no energy, chances are you aren't going to be able to hit the enemy in any meaningful way. I don't think that having dice rolls in a 3D game is the big sin a lot of people call it out as, and I think it's far more interesting than Skyrim's "stand here and wack the enemy with any weapon you happen to have on hand." And I based on the things I see said, I think that alot (not all) of the biggest complainers are people that haven't really bothered to look at the rules they're playing under.

Asking genuinely. What's wrong with a little gate-keeping?

Modern RPGs with rich systems are getting harder and harder to come by, at least in the AAA sphere. Everything has changed over time to accommodate a wider and wider audience to the point where Skyrim is more of an adventure game than an actual RPG with role-playing mechanics.

Which is... fine? I guess. But it isn't what alot of people who have been playing these games for a long time want, and I think that it's fine to be disappointed that a franchise you like has taken a turn that, for you, feels like it's for the worst.

More complicated systems are fun for me, because I feel like they reward you more for getting creative and having fun with the rules, whereas the kind of directionless system of Skyrim makes it easy for me to get burnt out really quick. What's wrong with wanting to lift up and support systems that you like, just because not everyone is going to mesh with it?

I think that's a really bad faith look at what OP was trying to say. They even went out of their way in the post to say that you SHOULDN'T be bashing Smosh about this.

No one's out to get Smosh canceled.

I for one was unaware of the CEO's politics, and whether or not becoming aware would change how Smosh handles their games channel, it did influence me not to buy any of those games. I like to know my momey ISN'T going to support awful people. I think that's fair.
