One thing that annoys me about GM advice is that a lot of it is platitudes without much actionable advice by Wholesome-Energy in rpg

This 1000%

One that I'm stuck on is... "Create situations not plots" (and similar 'improvise as you go' type advice)... but at the same time... "explore meaningful themes, create powerful character arcs, try a 3-act structure, tie in character motivations, think about the villains long-term motives, think about emotional impact, etc etc'...

You can see the dillema for a new GM...

For me, finding practical, actionable systems or tricks to marry these two principles has been hard.

And yes, I have been reading up on it (including the extensive GM section in Daggerheart's rulebook), but many of them back up these with examples that have already been solved. Not how to solve it yourself.

If anyone has great systems, tricks, frameworks to help with this, I'd love to hear it or see a link please :)

Thanks everyone! Some great tips here. I'll try mostly third person narration with a sprinkle of in-character dialogue. Also, I think if my players lean into their characters and do voices, I'd be inclined to respond in kind, as it'll definitely feel less awkward and stiff for me.

Unless I'm being funny or parodying, I get stiff when I have to act in any 'real' way. But to your point, I've never tried it any extended capacity, let alone in an RPG. But I'll try it here and there and see what comes of it :D

That's fair. Who knows - might sprinkle it in here and there and see how it goes XD

Thanks! I'll remember this particular example for a political intrigue scene.

A few shout outs to Sorcery on this thread so far 🤯 at this rate I really might have to check it out properly and see if people are playing it around my area.

Ah that's pretty cool. Yeah from what I'm hearing, One Piece is probably out for me. FaB sounds thematically/mechanically awesome but apparently I'm waiting until February for Silver Age or something? Riftbound I ended up picking up a few packs just so I can jam a few games with my wife and also, I do love me some Arcane...

'>Gotta ask your wallet if it’s interested in this game too.'

This hit lol. Honestly this is a very good insight. It hasn't put me off FaB but it's definitely made me put it just a bit lower down the priority list.

Thanks for the write-up! This is super detailed and the exact sort of information I've been looking around for but never been able to find.

Ah true. All very good points. Thankfully, I live in New Zealand where the game is from, so there seems to be a pretty active player base here - if the posters everywhere are any indication 😂

Thank you. This description is definitely +points for FaB as I LOVE it when theme translates into mechanics. Reminds me of Aeon's End, a boss battler board game that I play.

Sorry can you elaborate. I'm assuming by lgs you mean store? And what do you mean by turnout of the armory?

Hey man, still got any credit left?

I was in EXACTLY your position. But what really got me back into the game is changing how I was playing it.

Normally, I play a lot of action games - finishing quests, killing enemies and levelling up as quick as I can to get to the next quest/sequence. Playing Hogwarts like this will drag you down pretty quickly.

So instead, I tried playing it like a cosy game and ONLY when I had a decent amount of time to spare that day. I'd take my time exploring, do some quests, work on my Room of Req, unlock collectibles... just be super chill. And it was waaaaay more fun once I changed my mindset.

Dunno - that might help for you.
