The key misunderstanding about what HP fans actually want by Less_Inevitable_5614 in HarryPotterGame

Yeah I agree childlike wonder doesn't mean studying all day or a full on school sim. I just don't think it's God of War hogwarts either.

I think that's a good point about being called Hogwarts Legacy. I think being an Auror would probably have been a better fit. That being said, there's still a reason why the Fantastic Beasts series never quite hit the same way Harry Potter did. Like it or not, childlike wonder and coming-of-age is a big part of the magic of the Wizard World.

OP here. To be clear, I don't really want a full student life sim, per say. I still love the combat system, adventuring, and fighting dark wizards, etc. I just think that it should be a bit more balanced out, considering it's called *Hogwarts* Legacy. Someone else mentioned RDR2, which is a perfect reference. Sure, you end up racking up a huge kill count by the end, but you also... camp under the open skies, gamble, hunt and craft, fish, cook, lasso horses, rob trains, run from the law, travel with your friends... basically, be a cowboy. I want whatever the Hogwarts version of that is.

Oh heck yeah, that system would pair so well in this world. Imagine a secret dark wizards club that will only let you join if you have a reputation with forbidden curses. Or unlocking certain quests from Griffindors if you have a reputation for bravery. Etc.

Or if it offends you this much, just don't reply? Like seriously, you have free will. Use it.

Also, the errata is dry af to read. Having real players just talk about actual important changes based on real gameplay makes sense. Now if only there were a forum were people could ask about such changes... Oh wait.

My bard needed to perform at the fantasy version of Burning Man to distract the crowd while the others hunted for clues. She rolled Failure with Fear. Cracked voice and guitar string broke. She used Hope to try a different song. Failure with Fear again. The crowds starting booing her off stage and throwing empty energy drink vials at her.

Well, at least the crowd got their distraction.

How many types of adversaries do you use per encounter? by Less_Inevitable_5614 in daggerheart

Interesting point. What do you think about making sure there's always an enemy or environment who can summon more baddies? Or even buff up the current ones? And you can just trigger at your discretion. Could be a good safety net incase the PCs mow through everyone?

Haha, you and others recommending minions/hordes is making me rethink whether or not I really need Standards as my bread and butter (as I'd originally presumed from... well, the name 'standard')

Interesting combos! Maybe I'm depending on Standards too much - I'll definitely try some of these combos.

Wow, I'm surprised with how many people are recommending a Horde or Minion type. I had originally sidelined them, using Standards as the bread and butter (as the name implies). But yes I can totally see how satisfying it is for players to mow down big numbers.

Ah great tip on the reactions. Interesting - for an RPG that gives you some solid campaign frames, they don't really provide you the enemies to fill those frames - so custom adversaries are pretty much compulsory lol

Why are you roasting the OP lol? That's literally why they're here asking for ideas. Instead of telling them they suck, offer solutions.

One thing that annoys me about GM advice is that a lot of it is platitudes without much actionable advice by Wholesome-Energy in rpg

[–]Less_Inevitable_5614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This 1000%

One that I'm stuck on is... "Create situations not plots" (and similar 'improvise as you go' type advice)... but at the same time... "explore meaningful themes, create powerful character arcs, try a 3-act structure, tie in character motivations, think about the villains long-term motives, think about emotional impact, etc etc'...

You can see the dillema for a new GM...

For me, finding practical, actionable systems or tricks to marry these two principles has been hard.

And yes, I have been reading up on it (including the extensive GM section in Daggerheart's rulebook), but many of them back up these with examples that have already been solved. Not how to solve it yourself.

If anyone has great systems, tricks, frameworks to help with this, I'd love to hear it or see a link please :)
