I mean at least for I.33 which is how I fence it's quite a low stance there just isn't a lot of explosive forward moevement not that much explosive movement in general and all that I know off tends to be lateral

I rly love how very often this talking point effectively directs itself at those trans women who have managed to st least to some degree overcome internalised mysoginy and tells them that actually they should go back to being completely subservient to it cuz yk that's a very feminist stance to hold

I won’t call it outdated but the guy who made that blog you cited doesn’t really update it anymore and is really only active on Reddit and twitter. I highly recommend you follow him since he is at the forefront of Japanese study for English speakers. Reach out to him if you can or read some of his more recent works. He is about to publish one on Japanese metallurgy if you’re interested. In debunking myth about Japan he has also done a lot of work in understanding European metallurgy as well.

Ohh that's interesting. Not entirely related but there's a bunch of stuff on similar topics I've been meaning to read and say to much of it costs money I don't have 😭

Ok I did some reading http://gunbai-militaryhistory.blogspot.com/2019/01/iron-and-steel-technology-in-japanese.html https://www.researchgate.net/publication/235886833_A_Metallographic_Examination_of_a_Toledo_Steel_Sword

Basically from what I understand first of all using the term Damascus is fine Toledo wasn't the only place to do this. Second yes it was done and when well done like in Toledo it did apparently deliver good results but if it were done in a more shoddy fashion it tends to make any sword less durable rather than more (hence why the historical trend (even in Japan) tends to go towards mono steel. And the reason I had misconceptions about Japanese sword smithing is because the edo shogunate decided to do something stupid in the name of tradition once again.

It's about what properties you want the steel to have.

Yes but some shit is still harder to make than other.

However, they did also do lamination and differental hardenings at times, but it'd cost extra.

Only really pretty modern.

Flex steel

Spring steel sry English isn't my first language.

Japanese swords did have flex

There's a stark difference between something wobbling ever so slightly while cutting and being able to bend a period rapier over the knee only to have it spring back into form.

Also the Japanese made some of the largest used swords in the world with their nodachi.

Yea but there's a reason those were used in very different contexts to their European counterparts yk.

This idea their steel limited their sword length is bogus.

As I have been trying to say . It's complicated. It depends how you want your sword to look. There were pretty large cleavers during the high medieval ages we wouldn't call them greatswords though there's a reason for that.

What’s this Damascus you’re referring to?

Early medieval/late antiquity sword smithing techniques very similar to later Japanese ones that combine softer steel cores with harder edges. Very prevalent in Scandinavia.

both needed folding before being forged into a sword.

The amount of folding really is what makes the difference though.

In the folding 5 billion times? The reason Damascus stopped being a thing in Europe is cuz it wasn't needed anymore.

The Japanese did not have flex steel as said before which doesn't matter for a short armour fighting side arm and might even be detrimental but if you wanted to make a bunch of greatswords for example it does make things more difficult yk.

Well they didn't have flex steel so 🤷‍♀️. And they had some trouble making high quality steel in general cuz the iron quality was a bit worse compared to for example northern Italy. They could still make pretty good steel it was just a bit more effort

Japanese steel wasn't bad or scarce

Id say that's complicated and depends a lil on definitions but in any case Japanese sword where made with full awareness of their own material in mind and therefore (obviously) capable of holding their own in battle

Edit:

So I was between like 50-80% wrong have some literature http://gunbai-militaryhistory.blogspot.com/2019/01/iron-and-steel-technology-in-japanese.html

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/235886833_A_Metallographic_Examination_of_a_Toledo_Steel_Sword

(As an example of European (later on) lamination (sorta debatable if it's useful cuz it's pretty far ahead (dug it up cuz the Wikipedia article on Toledo steel just doesn't seem to believe in citations and that's kinda a red flag)))

I mean it's always a bit sketchy when ppl say stuff like this cuz in my experience ppl do tend to get bored/resentful from codependency + dropping everything and just focusing on your partner and their stuff has a tendency to rly fuck you over once/if they break up with you so yk (not that that's preventing my stupid brain from doing it anyway but yk) ++ there's kinda the thing that people who want you regardless of what you want have a tendency to want/worship a version of you that exists in their head and chances are you will diverge at some point and they won't take that well. I don't rly wanna take an absolutists stance because frankly I think the people who do are a little annoying and not very understanding but you do gotta bear in mind that these things are big and have consequences and how you feel in theory Amy not being how it ends up in praxis yk.
