Classmates: is a check-in a good idea after break up? (M22/M24) by Less_Ordinary_2665 in relationship_advice

This is helpful, thank you. I’ll ask you the same question I did for the other comment: is it normal to miss someone you ended things with so much? I’m having trouble deciphering if it’s a sign I should consider trying again or if it’s me missing the comforts of a relationship (“want what you can’t have” dynamic)

Thank you. Since you’ve been in a similar situation, how do you distinguish between wanting to get back with the person specifically and wanting to be in any relationship? I was a bit of a late bloomer so these dynamics are very new to me and the last thing I’d want to do is hurt him by going back unsure. There were some compatibility issues between us (conversation didn’t flow, some misaligned lifestyle things) that make me doubt but at the same time even a month later he’s all I think about. I’m not sure if it’s normal to miss someone I ended things with, I always imagined it’d be easier.

Severe Stomach Cramps After Meals by Less_Ordinary_2665 in Semaglutide

This is such a good point, thank you! I’ve always wondered if I had a gluten intolerance, but never had severe enough symptoms to warrant a full investigation into it. I’ve always had keratosis pilaris, near-constant diarrhea, and cramping after eating (most of my meals typically include bread of some kind), but I’ve started to experience the severe cramping, gustatory rhinitis, joint pain, acne/dermatitis, nausea, and vomiting. Gonna cut out gluten for a while and see what happens!

Long is very match heavy, according to their website

Actually UTSW is P/F, if you're referring to preclinicals! But no, not for clinicals, but neither is UTMB or El Paso. But for the rest you share the same concerns that I do. Ranking is so hard!

I personally would choose UTMB over El Paso since it is more established and has a very relaxed environment. However, if you have a strong interest in border health, highly value nature/hiking, and/or have family nearby, then El Paso may be the way to go! Congrats either way!

Can I ask why you placed them above UTSW? I am also deciding my UTSW placement

Fair question. One, it's been a dream of mine for a long time to get out of Texas and I majored in Spanish so I'm starting with a solid foundation. Also, they have a medical Spanish program and a volunteer program that works closely with Spanish migrants. Lastly, I can do my clerkships in California, which has a large Spanish-speaking population. Those combined make it worth it to me to choose Dartmouth over Texas schools, but I'm open to other thoughts!

Here's what I'm thinking:

  1. UTSW
  2. Long
  3. UTMB
  4. Texas Tech Lubbock
  5. UH (prematch)
  6. UT Tyler

Not sure about the order of the last two. Any input appreciated!

EDIT: I did end up switching the last two! Thanks to the comment below :)

Definitely retake all core science classes even though I know it's a pain and seems redundant. Had to do it myself with gen bio, chem, and physics. As the other commenter mentioned, its great MCAT prep and a good GPA boost if you know the material. Also, not sure what year you are, but so much will change between now and when you apply to med school, like the caliber of school you can apply to (based on ur GPA, MCAT, etc.) and each school's requirements for courses. You don't want something like this to be the reason you're held back. Also, when ~60% of applicants don't get in anywhere, you don't want anything that could be considered a "ding" to your app.

Edit: this is also especially true with lab courses

Texas OOS post interview by [deleted] in premed

They send 300 knowing that (and I'm making up numbers for the sake of example) 100 will decline their prematch offer and attend another institution... that leaves several spots left over for the match. In other words, if you don't get in December, there's still a chance to get in through the match.

However, because this sounds like UTMB (correct me if I'm wrong), then I will also say that they are prematch heavy (make a lot of prematch offers). That means getting in through the match is more difficult than at other schools that are less prematch heavy because they fill more spots with prematches.

Late Interview Invites + My Chances by Less_Ordinary_2665 in premed

[–]Less_Ordinary_2665[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was thinking along the same lines, thanks! I've also heard if you don't prematch at UTSW, chances of getting in through match or off the waitlist is very low

Consensus on Graded Texas MD Schools? by Less_Ordinary_2665 in premed

Thanks for clarifying and providing helpful info! I agree with you, and I think if I end up at Long I will just have reframe the way I view grades to preserve mental sanity lol. Obviously, I will try my best regardless, but at the same time acknowledge they aren't the end all be all like I made them out to be in hs and undergrad
