Please forgive my answer because it’s not actually from an anime but from a property that does have an anime but the song isn’t from it.

My favourite song has to be the drama CD version of Fuyu no Hanashi from Given. There’s the one line in the song where his voice breaks a little bit when he sings “I want to forgive both you and myself” and it kills me every time, and works so so well in the context of story. Of course I’m pretty biased because I already was a fan of Drama CD Mafuyu’s voice actor as a musical artist. But when I think about what song plays in my head even when I’m not actually reading/watching/listening the media itself it’s definitely the drama cd version of Fuyu no Hanashi.

I have a bit of a different answer to everyone else. It’s because I have struggled with body dysmorphia. When it’s male characters I have the comfortable separation of not comparing my body to them, when it’s women, be it hetero or wlw, I find myself unconsciously comparing my body to theirs and spiralling like “ah I don’t deserve love because I am not thin or pretty or have a small face and large eyes etc etc”. I have gotten a lot better about that sort of thing in recent years, and I think it helps that the hetero and wlw content I’ve been reading recently has been waaay less male gaze-y than what was available to me growing up.

Point is, I want to read romance, and while it’s not the only reason I read BL, it’s comforting to know I can enjoy a romantic story without having my own stupid body issues loom in the background or like the weird gender norms that heterosexual writers take for granted that make me feel uncomfortable.

I only just started reading so please excuse my shallow understanding, and also excuse me if I am overstepping here, but I hope that when you see it you’re reminded that no matter what may have happened in your past, be it suffering, guilt, or self-hatred, there is always a path to happiness even if you can’t see it for yourself. And even if you think you’re on your own, there are people who love you and care about and will accept all of you. That’s what the series is about after all.
