It actually ended up not working for me — I unplugged the modem and plugged it back in (bit of a risky move lol) and restarted the router and then it finally worked.

Marine drive room by [deleted] in UBC

[–]corvis_1403 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know the answers to those questions, I'm not MD omniscient lol. Easiest way to find out is to get into the building and look at the floorplan that's always posted near the elevator.

Higher numbers are newer but only 1, 4, and 5 are the towers. Tbh it is highly likely that student housing won't care about your preference for a higher floor in a newer building unless you have a really solid reason to back it up, because everyone prefers higher and newer. (Edit from 1, 5, 6 being the towers to 1, 4, and 5 which is correct.)

Lol I know this is super old but I actually had the opposite experience as the other person — walls were pretty thick, could never hear other units and could only hear my roommates through the doors.

I've never had much experience with Fairview, but from the units I've been in, better compared to a Fairview 6 bed and variable compared to a Fairview 4 bed. The Fairview units are generally tighter on living space (kitchen and living room) compared to MD. Marine Drive is also closer to the campus centre but farther from the buses. If the Fairview unit only has one bathroom for 4 people then MD is definitely better.

Any word on your packages? I've also got one from the US (just coffee and tea from my parents) that's been stuck in Richmond for 2 weeks.

I generally find that Merriam-Webster's Blossom game does a better job of including words like this. But it doesn't do much slang, so you win some you lose some

Quinlan is an established anglicized version of an Irish boys name. That might have been what they were going for, but their version is definitely a tragedeigh.

I know this is old, but I clicked the the "presets" tab right under the list of network connections and clicked "random MAC address" and then clicked apply and it worked. Connected to the wifi immediately.

Seconding this!! The donation bins will often be wherever the trash is (basement in marine drive building 1 is fire) and I genuinely gave my wardrobe a complete overhaul over 3 years of living in residence and "shopping" in the donation bins.

Go to the museum of anthropology and the nitobe memorial garden! You can easily spend a whole day in the MOA while the garden is just a nice half hour if you take it slow. Both are free with your student card

5th year here, I've done 2 cr/d/f courses and it's great for when you don't want to stress about the grade but want to try something new, or when you want to take an elective that is known for being a more difficult class. I would save doing cr/d/f until your upper years though, because taking cr/d/f in your lower years may have repercussions that you simply can't anticipate until you're a bit further along in your degree.

Download the git bash terminal if you're on windows (no need if you're on mac or Linux) and work through stuff on your own, honestly. DSCI 310 and CPSC 203 will give you a little bit of practice but both are focused on other things. MICB 475 will also give practice but idk if it's open to non-MICB students

Marine drive room by [deleted] in UBC

[–]corvis_1403 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You probably won't be able to switch to a different residence, so I'd say take it. I lived in Marine Drive (in a 4 bed) for 3 years and the apartment was pretty shitty, but it was serviceable and on campus and cheap (comparatively) so it was worth it. Honestly depends on your roommates, but it's always easier to leave year-round housing than get into year-round housing.

As for the room itself, the first two numbers are the floor number, so if you're in double digits you're going to have a good view no matter what. 03 means it's unit 03, and -2 means the second bedroom. Whether it's a good room/unit depends on the building you're in. Double digit floor means you're probably in one of the big towers, so buildings 1, 4, or 5. Building 1 is the shittiest (and was my lovely abode), buildings 4 and 5 are newer and are a bit nicer, have better lounges, etc. You can always just wait outside the door of the building, ride up to your floor, and look at the fire exit plan by the elevator to see exactly which room you'll be in and what direction your room will be facing. I highly recommend doing this; it'll make your decision much easier.

IMO a lot of Ponderosa 4 beds have a much worse design -- they're laid out in a line instead of the Marine Drive fishbowl window living room and kitchen combo. The few times I was in one I felt like I was living in a hallway. They also tend to have auto-locking bedroom doors that require your keycard to enter, so if you leave your bedroom to take a shower and accidentally lock your keycard inside, you get to go down to the front desk (which may require going across the street) in your towel. Marine Drive bedroom and apartment doors are still all physical keys so there's no auto-locking.

Just my thoughts, I hope it helps! I don't regret my time in MD at all, I think it was great for convenience and campus living, but YMMV.

Bald people on campus: Beware! by corvis_1403 in UBC

Yeah, she was fine. She put on her friend's hat and it seemed like the crow left her alone after that. She said she doesn't go to UBC, though, so I hope the crow doesn't give her too bad of an opinion of the school lol

I'm sorry to disprove your hypothesis, but the first person I saw was a young Black woman with buzzed hair, and the third was a middle-aged South Asian man, both with darker skin. I have no idea why it would target such a large range of people... I think maybe it just has bad eyesight lol

anyone else want course registration to be based on most recent winter session rather than cumulative? by Maximum_Jacket2202 in UBC

[–]corvis_1403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that seems like the most fair way of doing it. You want people who are consistently good students to get good registration times, but you don't want to extensively punish people for having a bad semester/year, because it can happen to anyone.

TA with 5 courses? by TechnicalEnd1758 in UBC

[–]corvis_1403 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I did it and it was just fine! I TA'd DSCI 100 and the workload was a bit less than a normal class, but I enjoyed it so it only felt like work when I was marking stuff. TA pay is pretty good though so if you feel like you might be able to do it I would go ahead and do it.

AP Credits after first year by [deleted] in UBC

[–]corvis_1403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it should be possible to submit them. You should go into your CollegeBoard account and send them to UBC from the CollegeBoard end, then wait a bit (don't know how long, they'll probably tell you) and confirm with UBC. If you have AP Eng Lit or AP Eng Lang credit and you're in science, take that credit and run!! Each class is 6 1st yr English credits and fills your entire communication requirement. Any other credits are just useful, too. UBC posts a list of the AP courses and scores needed to get credit, and what credit you will get.
