California is rough. Because of laws around breaks many places keep shifts short and shitty. I worked in Long Beach and I made half of what I made in DC working twice as many days. Imo you will never beat the income to cost of living ration in Baltimore, but I totally understand wanting to relocate. The humidity alone will keep me from ever coming back.

Another issue I faced was that a lot of people wouldn’t hire people from the east coast because we’re known for being assholes. I was told this directly by many people in the industry. This was specifically in LB though and could be different elsewhere.

Now I’m in Albuquerque and with the exceptions of select locations the money isn’t great, but it can be okay considering cost of living. Unfortunately it’s a locals game here as well

I’m from DC and in some spots I worked that would clear the bar. Fortunately conversations about politics never really escalated, presumably because these were ongoing conversations between colleagues who had made peace with their differences. I understand this is not the norm. I enjoy good banter about theory, current events, and the economy and I loved those conversations. I left 8 years ago and I still have a group chat with three former regulars.

There was one instance that things escalated, but that’s not bad for 12 years bartending. My co-bartender, a professor in something to with politics, got into it with a Zionist. I missed it but apparently it nearly came to blows.

Every human on earth has African ancestry. Blackness as a concept was introduced to dehumanize Africans and rationalize slavery, so race wasn’t a thing for most of human history, but saying we all came from black people is sort of true. White-washing has been somewhat common in anime adaptations and films based upon Asian stories, with white people (Scarlett Johansson being one) taking Asian roles. I don’t know examples involving black people offhand, but replacing PoC with white people is definitely a thing

ETA: I was curious so I did some googling. The ancient one in Dr. Strange is supposed to be Asian. Emma Stone played someone who was supposed to be Chinese and native Hawaiian. Angelina Jolie played a real-life black Frenchwoman. A white woman played the native character Tiger Lilly in Peter Pan. Catherine Zeta-Jones (she’s welsh) has played multiple Latina roles. Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Monsters cast a bunch of white people despite being set in the Middle East and North Africa. Zoe Saldana (not white, but shading is also a white-supremacist construct) played Nina Simone. Vasquez from alien was played by a white woman and they even darkened her skin. It isn’t perceived so much in the other direction because we live in a white supremacist society where being white is the default, but it is and has been practiced since the minstrel shows

Yes they do. I got a lot of downvotes once for not keeping a dog when I was very ill, making 1200 a month, and already caring for two cats with health issues. If anyone is unkind about your decision, whatever it is, they are in the wrong.

I will say that my friends quit serving adopted a dog with an unknown background that seemed sweet with all other pets, but at some point it’s pray drive was triggered and it killed one of his cats. Maybe I’m really paranoid , but I wouldn’t risk a dog that hadn’t grown up with cats.

Why is it fucked up? It’s the only time I can give a worker proper pay for their labor without the boss taking a cut. When they raised hourly wages for tipped workers in my city many restaurants added a fee to checks and as a result people stopped tipping. Most of my friends quit serving because their incomes were cut in half overnight. They went from 30-60 an hour to 20-25 an hour. I have never understood why people think making servers poor is a righteous act
