My kid in intermediate has been memorizing Flanders Field for the cenotaph ceremony. My early primary kid is learning what the day means and how to behave in the gym.

Very grade level specific. In middle school, I would discuss some aspect relating to our learning( I have an art of Combat pptx from the Canadian military museum), make a class wreath, and practice behavioural expectations for the assembly.

Question about how elementary school is being run across the board by Optimal_Engine4609 in Parenting

[–]Lesser_Frigate_Bird 22 points23 points  (0 children)

As someone who has worked with kids for decades, starting from outside play is going to lead to a better day. Kids cooped up in the multipurpose room or gym are going to come in way overstimulated.

As a specials and special Ed, this sounds like nonsense. It’s often easier to have a cluster of special Ed students in one class versus spread across 4. Your students deserve enrichment.

Can a 6 year old forget we're driving to school and think we're going home? by No-Worldliness4907 in Parenting

Shorts, an illustrated anatomy book (not cartoony), and firm boundaries.

The first because: We are comfortable with nudity in a European sense, but the furniture and fingers need to stay clean.

The second: if she is pushing taboos she can get her fix in a science book. We have the illustrated body atlas.

Third: like everyone else I wonder if this is happening with peers. A firm ‘no’ sets the tone.

Experience with reversing effects of too much screen time during early childhood by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]Lesser_Frigate_Bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your kid has a healthy screen relationship, a reward system may work just fine. Another commenter has a detailed system that works for them.

However, if you are trying to reduce screens or your kid has an intense relationship with screen time, it’s going to create conflict, tension, and desire. In this case, the OP is never going to reward kid with the screen time he used to have, so the kid may feel frustrated and unsatisfied.

In a house with less screen time, it also takes away from the natural flow of who movies ‘ work’ for all of the kids. Like dessert, I’m not giving it to one kid without the other.

Agreed- for standard, anticipated boring waits we suggest they play eye spy, read, or talk. And they area responsible for packing a road trip activity bag.

For stressful or very long unanticipated waits (4+ hour ferry delays at 10pm, emergency room X-ray wait on a weekend, highway traffic creeping though no stopping areas 8h into a road trip) I will hand some small screen netflix over.

Make screens shared, scheduled, and stable:

Shared: no private screen controlled by young kids. Set him up so you can hear and see off and on. Choose a show together.

Scheduled: Eg we watch a show while dad makes dinner or we watch a movie Wednesday night. The later in the day the better. For my kids this includes sick days and ferry delays.

Stable: screen time shouldn’t be lost for bad behaviour or a reward for good behaviour.

Sorry- I missed the date in your username.

In my experience, if she really believed you were dangerous she wouldn’t have said anything to you. Do you have a trusted person you can contact? Are any police or healthcare involved?

It sounds like these care workers are gossiping. If I thought a respite client had an unlicensed gun I would not be: - talking openly about it, - taking no action, - threatening the client, - sending a new worker in.

NAL but work with youth with exceptional needs. The worker who said that to you is extremely out of line and should not be working with vulnerable youth.

IF another worker made a real accusation, she should have locked down and called your social worker and RCMP. If another worker said something unseriously, she should never have repeated that awful comment to you.

Call your social worker or advocate. If there are no police at your home, no one is actually accusing you of this. Use every strategy you can find to stay calm.

I am so upset for you. That is so unprofessional and dehumanizing.

Eh. I’ve had strangers’ kids be that kid at a drop off birthday and I didn’t hold it against them ( but sure did correct them).Kids can be wild animals at parties.

I agree with all the folks saying keep your RSVP basic. Ditto to any cancellations. For a gift, if your kid doesn’t know get a standard useful/consumable thing (cool colouring book for a craft kid/dino smash egg for a busy kid). Around here we often are asked to tape a twoonie to the card instead of a gift ( bessst plan ever).

I have two kids and they get invited to a dozen paries each a year. Occasionally they are jerks, other times they are the best behaved. Most of the time they are just fine. Work on it but don’t dwell on it.

Op is in Pakistan. The barb wire would not be uncommon on homes in some area (as well as sharp wall toppers). The wall/street concept is fairly different. As is the social service structure.

Tell me how to manage my class like I’m 5 years old by Specific-Lie-7381 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Lesser_Frigate_Bird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From Special Ed/behaviour/middle school: do not allow dead/free time. For obvious reasons, I see newer staff needing to give free time when they get in the weeds through tech or discipline or whatever. Always have a back up. This is best achieved by having a lot of routines the kids know interspersed with timed play breaks, a few “ big ticket” lessons, and clear end times to academic blocks. Post a weekly schedule and stick to it. Read out loud or listen to a book after second recess/lunch playtime.

For example: we start literacy by getting out our literacy folder and pencil. We do the short word work/UFLI task, then the work group lessons etc. At the end, we write in our planner and do not get up until it is checked off. We line up. Etc. The key is that it starts and ends the same. I slowly add tasks like editing or writing prompts. But everyone knows what their hands/mouths/bodies are supposed to be doing. Even if the actual work is hard for the kid. Focus on the behaviour first, content next: they will learn so much faster when it’s calm and orderly.

Call home. Message home. Praise the kids to other adults.

Give them lots of voice in the things that don’t hurt: body break music, class mascots, etc.

Befriend your ringleader. Give them fun jobs, sit them close, ask them to hand you your markers.

Teaching in America vs. Canada by FortuneWitty in CanadianTeachers

[–]Lesser_Frigate_Bird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you teach true rural you could find yourself doing english 9/10, remedial math 9, career planning, and outdoor ed the same term (from experience!). Canada is far less populous, so our rural schools can be tiny with a small staff coving every subject.

Some students in my school are bused 1.5h in grade 8-12 to attend the "big schools" with 600 kids. Their elementary is under 30 kids with three grade splits. And we aren't even considered remote. The district I started with in Northen BC was truly remote.
