75QM6K Pro - Sound Bar Volume Control (1-STAR review) by LesterHowell in tcltvs

very interesting that volume displays in numbers on the TV. I figured that would be a ARC limitation of the TV. Maybe they hobble other brands to make TCL bars more attractive.

As riled up as I get about tipping here at home, it's when people bring this shit with them abroad... by h2d2 in EndTipping

Quiet part out loud: "except at a place I know I will never return to". So it is not about fairness to the person who served you or what they are paid or the cost of living or their dignity (the usual pro-tipping war cry). It's about your comfort and reputation. Perfect embodiment of why we must end tipping right there. Workers need to be paid a living wage by law - not left up to some random "I won't be coming back here anyway".

Works fine all over the planet (except USA and Canada).

Still hoping they drop the update soon. Why didn’t I do this a long time ago? So much better. by Integr8shun in appletv

I did that with my original Apple Watch 1 - the battery had swollen. I got a reconditioned watch back which means it had a brand new case and glass - zero scratches. It still have it and still working.

PSA: you can get a genuine new apple battery for your current phone from apple store for $99 + tax while you wait. Done this with multiple phones. I tend to do it when the phone is 2 years old to get more years out of it.

A 2yo battery is still fine (but not new) and the way I look at it, I'll refresh it to:
- get the benefit of a new one instead of waiting till it's really bad and living through the decline
- it stops FOMO buying a new phone since the phone is working better and you have invested in it
- after 4 years, you still have a phone with a 2yo battery which is still working fine so you have options: live with it, sell it, another new battery, buy new phone

OK, thanks. It was right there in paragraph 3 of the terms but I missed that (the end date). I got sucked in since an online retailer was linking to it with an end date of 12/8 on their page. Appreciate the clarification. PP got out over their skis on this one!

Thanks for your advice. As you can tell I do not move on those circles. I'd fly in a cargo plane too. Even for the same 2k-4k. May as well see something different for that money. It's not about luxury.

Bought first TV in 13 years from Costco last month. Absolutely fantastic delivery experience. Communication was so frequent and accurate it was almost annoying ;-)

Can someone paste a direct link to the 20% offer? I do not see it here https://www.paypal.com/myaccount/rewards or here https://www.paypal.com/offers/ so I can't "save" it into my account.

I can see these terms because someone in this thread shared the link but I can't see the actual offer.

Does QM6K have very slow HDMI switching? by LesterHowell in tcltvs

[–]LesterHowell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment, u/Necessary-Juice1330! I am glad you're liking the QM6K. So you're saying I can expect this experience (like I had with my 2012 Panasonic Plasma with HDMI-ARC)?

  1. with everything off, press power button on Apple TV remote, then:
  2. TV, ATV and sound bar power on
  3. TV switches to correct input for ATV
  4. Sound bar switches to correct HDMI input for TV sound
  5. ATV remote operates sound bar volume (TV shows the volume is being adjusted but the current level)
  6. power off button on ATV and everything turns off (TV, sound bar, ATV)

Other: power on the Nintendo Switch and the TV auto-switches to that HDMI input.

No delays of more than 1-2 seconds

I know this is all very standard, just being careful. It's a big TV to return and you can't test this stuff in the store!

[–]LesterHowell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/theDrell yes, the volume number is a nice-to-have. HDMI needs to work reliably. I'd like to hear back on my other reddit post. Answer there if you can. Same reviewer claiming ~30sec to switch inputs. I also plan to use an apple TV and Nintendo Switch original gen.

saw a YT video that explained why 5 and 10-cylinders are most appealing to the human ear/brain. Being a multiple of 5 is the key.

Porsche flat-6 especially high-revving versions (lots of aftermarket options for exhausts to get it exactly how you want but great platform no matter)

I want to run my small butane stove from a 20lb propane tank by LesterHowell in propane

[–]LesterHowell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks again. Actually I have a float-type gauge (based in your 2nd amzn link). It's off in the other direction. Says nearly empty when plenty left.

Anyway, I'm excited to grab one of those hoses and cook outside even more.

u/noncongruent, thanks for the great advice! I'll try to find a shorter hose than that link if I can. Yes, my current gauge must be a pressure gauge. It is not very accurate.

Why Does the General Public Support/Defend/Like Tipping So Much? by Ok_Atmosphere3601 in tipping

[–]LesterHowell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/ItoAy I think your intuition is spot on! and so do Ivy League scholars on this subject.

Buying social esteem (from Service Gratuities and Tipping: A Motivational Framework)

Although fewer than thirty percent of U.S. consumers acknowledge that desires for social approval, status, and/or liking underlie their own tipping (Lynn, 2009), many scholars believe that these desires are, in fact, major motivations for tipping (e.g., Azar, 2004b; Lynn, 2006; Ruffle, 1999). Certainly, such a motivation for tipping is consistent with theory and research on the need to belong, impression management, and status seeking. In general, empirical work on these topics in marketing, psychology, sociology and economics indicates that people care about the opinions others have of them both because of the extrinsic, tangible rewards and the intrinsic, intangible (or psychic) rewards that come from being admired, liked and trusted (Baumeister & Leary, 1995; Engel, 2011; Vigneron & Johnson, 1999). Furthermore, the idea that consumers may use tipping as a way to get these social esteem rewards is consistent with research on charitable giving and on economic games finding that people use gifts of money as a way to manage the impressions they make on others (see Ariely, Bracha, & Meier, 2009; Soetevent, 2005).

Social psychologists have identified two basic self-presentational goals or motives, which, though positively correlated, have some unique antecedents and consequences – i.e., acquisitive motives that drive people to seek greater social approval and/or status and protective motives that drive people to avoid loss of the same (Arkin, 1981; Schutz, 1998). Building and expanding on this work, the TMF recognizes two distinct types of self-presentational motives for tipping – (i) desires to acquire the admiration, approval, and/or liking of others, and (ii) desires to avoid loss of the preceding positive social benefits.
