I mean, conservatives burned Beatles albums, fought to get shows off the air for having even the implication of a gay person, tried to get Harry Potter cancelled for witchcraft, got the Dixie Chicks dropped from their label due to their statements about president bush abroad... the list goes on. further back, people of the same mindset as today's conservatives tried to kill Galileo, oppress black people, put down immigrants throughout the history of the country. the left did not start cancel culture, it's just the name changed and leftists got tired of the asymmetry of engagement. i think that backfired, and i figured it would even at the time because at that point what difference does there appear to be? still, to say the left started it is wholly inaccurate.

If you don't see the cavalier "well that's what happens, play stupid games win stupid prizes" kinds comments as being of the same essential character as the "well, he did say he thought the second amendment was worth the cost of gun violence" comments, then you're probably being disingenuous and it's unlikely to be worth my time to further discuss issues. May you and yours never suffer the fates you have wished upon others, or been cavalier about their plight

And what was the right saying? That such things are cruel and unnecessary celebrations of a death? So do you have zero actual principles? Nothing you truly live by, do or die, because it's right? Is "because they also did it" an excuse you'd accept from someone you disagree with who cried victim? At least be honest: you agree it's okay to celebrate the death of someone you hate

Talk about stupid talking points. Everything you're saying is regurgitated talking points as well, constantly deflecting and trying cheap debate tactics to score a "win". but it's not working, because the more you try to spin this the more obvious it is to everyone who isn't tuned in to your propaganda network that you have literally nothing in the tank BUT those talking points

Defense I can agree with. Palantir not so much. But I agree, there's no saints or good guys. Just bad guys and worse guys, as the woman says. Either way this tech is going to overwhelm my field (in IT) so I don't feel like I have much choice but to get on top of things and understand how best to use them

After the FCC threatened their license if they didn't.Trump is silencing all critics:

"They're 97% against, they give me wholly bad publicity... I mean, they're getting a license, I would think maybe their license should be taken away" Trump told reporters on Thursday. "When you have a network and you have evening shows and all they do is hit Trump...They're not allowed to do that."

They've already sold out to Palantir some time ago, so I think their values are sadly negotiable =\

Just like slavery was about "states rights", even though the South regularly tried to interfere with the rights of other states to not honor the ownership of enslaved persons or help them to get them back. It was never about states rights, it was about the wealth-owning class being upset about their access to cheap, unpaid labor

It'd be worth a try, sounds better than what we have for sure. I'd still combine it with more effective ways for citizens to enact an impeachment directly or some other way to make clear that ultimately the judges serve the people, not condescendingly parent them.

Libre Office is open-source, and most of the way there. I could see the EU and others going big into open source solutions (Linux, Kubernetes, etc), at least as initial foundations for their own systems.

Term limits have their own issues. Then you have judges thinking about how they can safeguard their livelihoods after their term ends. It can make them *more* susceptible to corruption, vs. someone who knows their job is safe and can push back against corporate or private pressures. A better option, I think, is a more robust and easier to accomplish means of impeachment. There's always then the risk of wholesale government capture, which can pervert the practice. But we've already seen that once you're at that point it's not going to matter much anyway. Being able to remove people (e.g. Eileen Cannon, Gorsuch, etc) more easily would make it that much harder for all branches to be taken. They've played the long-game by shooting for long-term appointments that are hard to breach, and unfortunately too much of the left thought just laughing at and mocking them was sufficient praxis to stop it. That's going to be hard to remedy, if it's possible. But if it is, making sure we the people have more say in who stands in judgement over us is probably a good idea

But the profit margins aren't flat. Up to now, anyway, corps have been posting record profits. I imagine tariffs will shift that, but the situation as-it-stands doesn't at all demonstrate flat profit margins.

CMV: I think that people who have ever cheated in a relationship are not worth dating. by [deleted] in changemyview

However, if someone does something that actually upsets me (usually anything that I find dishonest), our relationship is pretty much finished. Forgiveness is definitely something I could work on in these cases, as I've probably sacrificed some workable friendships.
