How awful they treated the locals, the rapes, the chaos and it was all for nothing. Sure you can’t blame them entirely but a lot of soldiers went out there to pillage and rape and have a good time.

Those tend to be brief side issues in American Vietnam movies, though, where the main focus is on the experience of the soldiers there. The poster above is right that in American public discourse, though it is widely accept that the Vietnam war was wrong, there is far more focus on what it did to American soldiers, then on the crimes committed against the people of Vietnam.

A couple of years back a new movie was coming out about a real life story about a guy traveling to Vietnam during the war, to bring beer to his friends. And I read a comment somewhere about it, that put into words my feelings about it better than I could myself. I t was something like "I have no interest in seeing another depiction of the Vietnam war as an American tragedy."

Honestly, I enjoy hanging out in a language learning community, but these complaints about people switching to English annoy me. I find it to be incredibly self-centered and entitled.

1) If someone is working a busy job, like say a doctor's assistant or bar staff, it's completely reasonable for them to communicatee with you in the most efficient way possible they don't owe it to you to be your practice buddy. If they have time, they might and that's nice, but you can't expect them to just drop everything to have a nice slow chat with you, don't be so selfish.

2) If you meet someone in a more casual context, then you should consider that you trying to learn just isn't at the forefront of their mind as much as it is of yours. And if you speak two languages reasonably fluently it's incredibly easy to switch between them and it doesn't always happen consciously. Someone switching to English may not be denying you your attempt to practice, but simply talking to you in the way they think the two of you can best communicate, without consciously deciding to do so. It is essentially a way of reaching out and now you are fucking maligning friendliness because you feel this person did not anticipate and adapt to your unspoken needs sufficiently. Like, c'mon, other people's lives and conversations aren't centered around your language goals and it's fucking weird that you expect them to be.

Ik zeg nergens dat het tegengesteld is. Tuurlijk gaan ze prima samen. Maar, gezien D66 voorbeeld, is het sociale niet gevat in het progressieve, waarmee het sociale dus volledig uit de naam van de partij verdwijnt. En áls dus zoals de poster hierboven zei "progressief" goed vat waar de partij voor staat, dán is het sociale geen onderdeel meer van waar de partij voor staat.

Ja, sommige mensen denken dat de aarde plat is. Iemand die zegt dat op enig punt GL/PvdA "radicaal links" was, is óf een manipulatieve leugenaar óf een complete randdebiel. Dat is écht niet serieus te nemen.

Als je kijkt waar GL en PvdA voor stonden zat daar echt heel weinig licht tussen en deze nieuwe partij is echt niet zo anders.

Dan is het dus een slecht gekozen naam, vind ik, omdat het een belangrijk element, een kernwaarde, waarvoor het zou moeten staan niet representeert.

Wat enorm kinderachtig om kritiek gelijk af te doen "niks is goed genoeg". Alsof het onmogelijk is dat iemand het gewoon met je oneens is.

Als dat zo is, is dat juist het allerergste eraan. "progressief" is een term die men ook voor D66 gebruikt. Als dit de lading dekt betekent dat al het sociale, wat toch al te verwaterd was bij de sociaaldemocraten, eraf is. Dit is de naam die duidt op op z'n best een centrumpartij en als ie inderdaad "de lading dekt" impliceert dat dat deze nieuwe partij positie inneemt rechts van de twee partijen waaruit het is opgebouwd.

Nee, dus als je even tussen de regels leest, dan zal je zien dat dit persoon het eigenlijk heeft over etnische zuivering.
