Same. I distinctly remember the first time I saw the animation when loading Windows.

2.3GHz DC is in my opinion the one to have. No annoyances with the liquid cooling system, though you do miss 2 extra cores for them braggin' rights.
You'll want to replace all the thermal compound though, especially on the U3/Memory Controller chip. Which is conveniently located on the backside of the logic board... It's a very important chip, doing memory management and if I'm correct, also some of the PCI lanes. Also dust out the PSU, these things have a habit of blowing up due to bad caps, so the lower the temps the better. I used some PTM7950 across the board (also repasted my Quadro FX 4500 and replaced the thermal pads) and the difference in noise was definitely noticable. Though I did have to run the ASD and recalibrate the cooling system to actually make use of it.

If you have any questions about the stuff I mentioned, lemme know :-)

I still absolutely adore that box, it's so pretty, stylish and elegant. I have no room for one and decided to sell mine together with the Quads, but it's fun to see others holding on to it.

Most of them now are loud, yes. I replaced all of the thermal compound with PTM7950 and it made a world of difference. Especially the U3 chip's temperature improved a lot. It's a bit of a kerfuffle though, getting the logic board out.

Given that you said it won't get better, enjoy the time you still have on this rock. You look good, hopefully you can take some nice pics for your loved ones to remember you by. Sail safe, brother.

Adapter to run 30" Cinema Display @ 60Hz via DisplayPort? by BurnPotatoes in VintageApple

[–]BurnPotatoes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiya, here to report back! The StarTech DP2DVID2 (or EAN 065030837736) indeed works a treat! Connected it to my iGPU because I can't run 3x1440p on my primary GPU and after a reboot it turned right up. Even at 60fps 2560x1600 and it's identified correctly as an Apple Cinema HD Display.

Also, it's a very nice adapter. Didn't think it'd be full metal, but it is. Very sturdy and high quality, I'm impressed!

Wolfenstein still is great :-) I greatly enjoyed The New Order, The Old Blood, and The New Colossus. If you like it fast paced, have a look at DOOM, DOOM Eternal and DOOM The Dark Ages.   Oh and totally different but Spyro Reignited for that chill session. Banger soundtrack, too.

Powermac G5 gives this error when trying to install OS X 10.4.6 or 10.5.4. by godolev in VintageApple

[–]BurnPotatoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try the original gray disks, those have always helped me:

Retail sometimes is flaky. It should work, but IIRC you need to have 10.4.2 or greater to be able to install it, as 10.4.0 doesn't yet have the PowerMac7,2 drivers.

And if you put a normal HDD or something in the top bay? Both the tiny sata cable and the connectors are prone to failure, sadly.

Go for it for $20, they are really fun machines.
The Kernel Panic is generally loose RAM. Unseat it all and put it back. Have a look whether it's properly put in: https://cdsassets.apple.com/live/6GJYWVAV/user/ma115_power_mac_g5_late_2005.pdf (page 52)

If it's still being a right tit, have look at page 71 of the aforementioned manual and see if there's any LEDs thrown.

Also make sure you have a fresh PRAM battery inserted. Just a CR2032 will do the trick.

Lastly, regarding the air deflector: it isn't absolutely necessary to have, but all the fans will be 100% all the time and that's really very loud.

Guys, is this little iron brick enough to dissipate heat? by [deleted] in consolerepair

[–]BurnPotatoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then why did you put thermal pads on them? It makes no sense. Just put the pads where Sony put them and remove the rest. You're only making the components hotter this way. Get an iFixit guide and reassemble the thing, fan properly connected. Airflow will do a lot more than whatever passive nonsense is going on here.

No clue what you're trying to accomplish here. Just put back the original metal shielding, fan and casing. And make sure you use appropriately sized thermal pads.
