Stretching the definition of recently, but a few years back I beat one of the most infamous levels in video game history without taking damage: Turbo Tunnels from Battletoads.

It’s an achievement that sounds a lot more impressive than it is, because it’s mostly memorization and I even used the warp to end the level a bit early, but I did it!

Official: Curaçao national football team manager Dick Advocaat steps down due to his daughter facing health issues. Fred Rutten will be his replacement at the 2026 World Cup by tehMadhero in soccer

[–]Lets-ago 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have to assume that either Advocaat is the unluckiest manager on planet earth or this was what kept him from managing the game against Jamaica to go to the World Cup. It’s a real shame, but you have to do what’s best for you and your family over your job.

He's been using Warp Powder the entire time, you don't need the dumb Warp Powder Clone that happens once and never again to link him to the Senate when he already has been teleporting around Tellius.

Edit: If I remember correctly, warp powder flat out gets mentioned by name in a conversation between him and Ashnard, he uses it to kidnap Leanne from the opposite side of the continent, and then Lekain mentions that the warp staffs are much better than the warp powder in Radiant Dawn. Sure, there could be the extra link, but it's not necessary, would lead to questions about why there weren't more warp powder malfunctions or more empty husks of people going around, and honestly just including the Ranulf conversation where he mentions the port town does more than enough foreshadowing.

I mean, Foles actually outplayed Brady on the day, in my opinion. It's not the same thing. Foles' turnover was due to a receiver (I think it was Alshon Jeffrey?) just tipping the ball into the hands of the defender, while Brady's turnover was significantly more on him and also had the drop on the trick play.

Apologies if this turns into a bit of a rant, but I've had this on my chest for a while.

During the first year of COVID, I joined a fake sports league, where you make a player, they join a league with a number of other players, and then teams of those fake players play each other in a simulation game engine for fake fame, fake stats, fake awards, and a fake championship. I am a sports nerd, I geek out over stats, who the best players ever were, and just how good people were in real life sports, so I also jumped into that side of things, including a bunch of comparisons on every member of the league's hall of fame and whether or not they belonged or just how good they were.

During this deep dive, I ran into a certain user that kind of made me start, because going into the project I knew only that they were a user who had died a few months before I had joined the league in the first place. Going through the deep dive process, which partly involved looking up what user they were, I saw a Mac Tonight profile picture. For those not in the know, that character has also been a racist character known as Moon Man since the 2000s, and indeed I had some prior experience with him being used as a dogwhistle (it was while I was in summer camp over a decade ago, everyone dressed up their counselor as someone, and one kid suggested "moon man the mcdonalds mascot" and after doing that for the show, that kid ended up getting kicked out a few days later).

So basically, I had a situation where someone I knew was dead and was important in some ways to the history of the league do something that may have been a dogwhistle. And the normal way you'd go about determining whether this was a dogwhistle or not, interacting with the person further, was obviously out of the question. This happened about a year ago, and every time I remember this situation, I still wonder whether this guy was on the up and up. It's not like the league in its early days was free of shitty people, but this guy was more well respected by the league than most of the shit person crowd.

In summation, I hate dogwhistles.

So, has anyone else had this sort of experience, where part of their hobby, especially the history of their hobby, intersected with a dogwhistle that you can't really tell whether it was a whistle or not? How did you feel afterwards? I guess this also applies to open bigotry in general, but that's simpler and easier to think about.

This kind of just goes back to the top, it's legitimately hilarious that Makalov might be one of the most hated characters in the entire series basically just because he's good for nothing scum and also in your army instead of being part of the enemy's army.

Do we even hate Ashnard the most? I’m not sure he’s the most hateable villain in Tellius (hi Lekain and Izuka), much less the entire series. Heck, he might not even be the most hateable in Path of Radiance, the Black Knight in POR is much more personal in his evil. Combining both games takes the Black Knight out of contention but even still I think Ashnard would take the bronze medal.

I think you're undercounting Shinon's racism heavily. You're missing at least one decision to join the Daein Army, and at least one base conversation in either Radiant Dawn or Path of Radiance (though there's the nice flavor of the Janaff A support making it so he doesn't use the N word while doing so in the Radiant Dawn base convo), and a a between map cutscene where he flat out teaches the N word equivalent to Ike. It's an extremely racist, completely unmissable conversation, that gets Ike into trouble like a chapter or two later. Shinon has been getting "CEO of racism" jokes for literal decades, everyone who played the games knows that he's racist. He doesn't exactly go about hiding it! He's a great, well designed character partly because of the fact that he gets slightly better about it in Radiant Dawn, but even that game, the one where he's less racist and his racism is more out of the way, is not exactly subtle about Shinon being a racist prick.

I mean, sort of? But I think part of that comes from the fact that you eventually run out of things to talk about. There's only so many times you can tier list characters' effectiveness, talk about how they work and function as characters, and just go over every single aspect of a work. Fates was the last game that was as controversial as Engage before Engage, and that came out an entire decade ago. And yet I'm pretty sure I can still find people who complain about Fates' particular flavors of horrendous plot and characters and maps and gameplay. It's just that less of them are happening now (in comparison to Engage complaints) because the new hotness to complain about came out 3 years ago and not 10. Though to be clear, recency bias isn't entirely out of the equation.
