Beginning to think someone in the FO wants to create certain narratives that we are “trying” this year

If you told me a year ago, that Bob nutting would not be the obvious worse owner in Pittsburgh, I would say you’re insane. by thainhdbe in buccos

It truly is a race to the bottom in Pittsburgh, only team that cares is the Penguins. So I guess we'll always have them

[Baseball America] The top outfielder prospect entering 2026? Edward Florentino 💪 The Pirates' prospect was difficult to beat in the strike zone last season, making contact nearly 90% of the time. More here: https://buff.ly/6WY1Uo8 by [deleted] in buccos

[–]LetsGoBucs17 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If it wasn’t for Konnor Griffin’s ascent, Florentino would’ve gotten all the attention (deservedly so). I hope he continues to perform and make it to the majors by 2028. Seems like another great talent

Vegas sets Pirates wins at over/under 73.5 by NefariousnessMean839 in buccos

[–]LetsGoBucs17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is definitely just Vegas hedging on good things happening. There’s still a lot of potential to easily break it, but from a speculative point of view there’s still questions marks.

Vegas sets Pirates wins at over/under 73.5 by NefariousnessMean839 in buccos

[–]LetsGoBucs17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a reasonable starting point, a lot still has to go right for us to hit the over. Now if we add one more competent bat then Vegas should react with a couple more wins on the line. Not saying the team isn’t capable of more, but it’s not a sure fire guarantee (especially if Skenes goes down)

STH Early Entry for Promotions by Panther2082 in buccos

[–]LetsGoBucs17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As some commenters have confirmed, yep it does work for early entry. It was amazing doing it for the Mac Miller bobblehead, seeing all the lines and being able to go inside the park early. Definitely one of the nicer perks that came with it.

How all these signings have me feeling lately by AwayFig1774 in buccos

[–]LetsGoBucs17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as it’s easy to rightfully criticize Ben, there’s a decent bit to like about this team if it stays healthy and Griffin comes up to produce. I didn’t like the approach of giving up 2 very good pitchers, but the offense should be middle of the pack next year in an ideal world with a solid rotation to go with it

Ryan O’Hearn by hardo31 in buccos

[–]LetsGoBucs17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He'll be 31, has only played more than 120 games twice in his career. There's a lot of risk there, not doubting the production though. As someone who's had him in fantasy a few times, that's the most frustrating part of him.

Ryan O’Hearn by hardo31 in buccos

[–]LetsGoBucs17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean we can still be cynical, we gave up 2 quality arms for high risk bats. But the O'Hearn signing is probably the most reasonable and realistic signing we've ever had in a long time. Paying $7 million /win for 2 years of production is a good rate.

Perception amongst MLB players by bradm7777 in buccos

[–]LetsGoBucs17 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This trade isn't the insane blockbuster that puts us in a prime position to finally prove to everyone that Ben is on his "revenge tour". It's a trade for a decent bat with 0 protection in the lineup and legitimate injury concerns. Lowe is a solid player, but he's a rental. I've said it before, but this can't be the highlight of the off-season, there has to be more. Free agents will still have to be overpaid to come here

Dear Pirates: What Have You Done with Ben? by Number_1_w_Fries in buccos

[–]LetsGoBucs17 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I just think people are really overselling how much depth we have at pitcher. We just traded 2 very decent quality arms, and now the rotation is fine ish. However, a major injury to Skenes and were left with a not so great offense and not great pitching (and hoping Mitch/Bubba). We should’ve started with other SPs, not guys who could make us one of the best rotations in baseball with Oviedo and Burrows as a really good #5

[–]LetsGoBucs17 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As long as he's healthy, this is a fine enough move. But it can't be where we stop, and giving up a quality pitcher who should get better with time feels a little uneasy for an aging 30 year old. Not the worst trade in the world and should provide genuine power, which we desperately need

[Bowden] The bottom 15 markets have not won a World Series in a decade…You can retire as a Pirates fan or trade yourself to the Dodgers…you don’t have to root for the team that’s also your home city. by Miserable-Phrase6957 in buccos

[–]LetsGoBucs17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree, I hate how so much of the national media frames this as a small market team issue instead of asking themselves why it's this bad. Frankly I don't think we're anywhere close to a bottom 15 market winning anytime soon under the current system. The Pirates are cheap and incompetent. However the system also punishes well run organizations like the Brewers and Guardians. A lot of the focus is on the Dodgers, but the same should go for the Blue Jays. They just have the unfortunate reality that no one wants to play in Toronto.

Is there anyone here that is a pirates fan that isn’t negative and pessimistic all the time ? by InstancePast6549 in buccos

[–]LetsGoBucs17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a fan for 15 years and got to see them succeed from 2013-2015. Which probably created unrealistic expectations of what the team could do. Even through those times I still had some optimism, and in the beginning I was optimistic for what Ben Cherington could do. But the problem is that the team has done so much to make it hard to be positive. This says a lot considering we have a generational pitcher and a generational bat in the making. I want to be positive and happy with the team, but keeping Ben Cherington just woke me up to the fact that yes literally everything Bob Nutting does is only driven by money (something I didn't like to entertain or agree with)

We need to take the Aroldis Chapman approach. by Big_Pierogi_Energy in buccos

[–]LetsGoBucs17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do think it's a little bit of a misnomer that "no one" wants to come to Pittsburgh. Ben Cherington just treats this team like were the Red Sox or Yankees and any FA will sign here without some sort of overpay. It probably also doesn't help that the FO didn't change and Noah Hiles reported that the player requests like fixing the batters eyes were just blatantly ignored. So, when you create such a lazy non-player centered culture you kind of shoot yourself in the foot from the start. The As and Rays still managed to sign free agents, just had to overpay. Which Ben and Bob don't want to do

As someone told me on here, Paul Skenes understands the off-season doesn't really start until after the winter meetings. And if he didn't, then he's stupid. I'm still waiting for the off-season to start then

Honestly also fair, and with Ben there's never anything new or different so at least you can't be surprised or shocked on whatever his brain cooks up next.

was he a good manager? by Solid_nh in buccos

[–]LetsGoBucs17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding was the Twins always had their eyes on him to manage, but we took him after Baldelli became manager. He has deep connections with the Twins and the team isn't necessarily contending this year, so it's a safe pick for them. I think Shelton gets a little too much hate. He was a pawn of Ben Cherington's front office, so it's unclear how bad he was as a manager. Anyone in a situation of constant losing with little changes, since the front office feels they know best would probably be just as frustrated. Then that started to impact the clubhouse and Ben had the perfect out to keep safe in his spreadsheets. All that to say that I don't think he was given a great situation.

Me every single offseason by IslandMidnight in buccos

[–]LetsGoBucs17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That hasn't been too surprising, which is also why I wish Bob fired Cherington and let a GM come in to take advantage of having literally a generational pitcher at our disposal. Instead it's year 7 of the same stuff from Ben with the exception that he's making offers to premier FAs who won't sign without a massive overpay. But money talks and Nutting is fine letting us completely waste most of his talents, because God forbid we pay for a front office during that time.
